( If it was my machine, I'd probably ask for a new shift arm and replace it myself. )
Normally on a simple part I'd agree with you, but this replacement is much more complex than it sounds. I'm attaching a parts manual illustration of the complete shifter linkage from the pod on the left fender to the transmission.
The 3-section shifter arm is highlighted in yellow. There's always a chance that one of the connections or the adjuster linkage came loose, but Horstuf said the linkage is broken, so I'm thinking it needs to be replaced. Most likely the part that failed is #25 that extend up thru the pod (blue). That part shares a common pivot axle (shown in green, #22) with the PTO and 4WD selector links. It bolts to the platform under the pod. The pod is removable, but to get to the bolts, you need to remove the left wheel (Are his tires loaded?). Now once you have the wheel off, the bolts going up into the pod may be crossthreaded or stripped out. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif How do I know? Well, that's exactly what I found on my tractor when I decided to do my own repair of a broken HST pedal. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Of course, you might be able to convince your dealer the threads were stripped at the factory, but I wouldn't bet on it. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Anyhow, I just wanted to put this diagram up so you could see why I don't recommend that Horstuf volunteer to do the job himself. Let's just say I've been "bitten by that bug" and now I'm a little less likely to want to volunteer for work my dealer should do for me. If it were an easy job, I'd say, "Go for it!" This is not a particularly easy job.
