Happy new year!

I have a 24 1/2 by 27 1/2 window broken. (that's the glass size) It's double pane and the window will tilt in and pull out with a couple tabs slid over. The window is the kind that slides up to open. I guess a glass guy could fix it. I'm wondering if Lowes or some store like that would have replacements off the shelf. I don't know the name of the window. I wanted to fix it today if I could.

I've done single window glass but never had to do double pane. Is this an easy fix or will it be a bear?

Cheers.....Coffeeman

depends on the frame, but should be easy to do. the one at the house I rented was 4'x4' in a wood frame, I had to do some adjusting on the trim pieces for the new window was thinner/thicker (don't remember which one).
Is the measurements the actual glass size? you going to have to call and find someone who has some.

You can save a lot by removing the old glass yourself and taking it to a glass shop to order... or you can take the entire slider. This is what I do to save, otherwise I would have to pay the glazier for two home visits in addition to the glass.

In the interim, cut a piece of 1/4 inch plywood and use it like a piece of glass.

You stated it was double pane. As far as I know, it is not available "off the shelf". If it is Low E, you will have to order it. If it is not Low E, a glass company can make one for you. It would be called an I.G. Not hard to install if you have done them before. Not to hard if you have seen someone do one before.

Look for a name on the window hardware, Then look inside the I.G. (between the pieces glass. Some of them have a control number stamped in there. The number tells the glass mfg. the particulars of that window, providing you know who the Mfg. is.

Good Afternoon Coffeeman,
I broke one of my double hung windows on the first floor a few years back. They are Anderson vinyl clad double pane. I removed the the broken window and frame, and had a local glass shop replace the glass. They did a horrible job, after they finished I couldnt even get the window installed again. I ended up getting a new replacement pane from Anderson and installing that.

Im very careful using my ladder around any windows now ! ;):)

Any good glass shop should be able to make one up for you - if you have the right dimensions and the thickness (yep they do differ) of the thermopane. If it is recently manufactured and you know the make of window you can usually get it from the manufacturer but a lot of times that takes as long and costs as much as ordering it from a glass shop. Around here that piece of glass would take a week and cost between $50 and $100 ( JUST TO FOREWARN YOU) Usually the pane is held in by a molding and a bitumen type sealing tape. Carefully take off the molding and pull out the pane (suction cups are great for this). You might have to replace the sealing tape too! Hope this helps
Regards

Don't know how old your glass is. Some double pane windows are ( mine are ) filled with nitrogen Or some sort of inert gas for better R value

Thanks to everyone for all the info.

Seems like my plan is to get a whole window with the glass already in it. Just want one of the double windows. Lowes suggested I could get whole window and frame for $230 while just ordering one of the double hangs would be about $150. The Lowes guy thought that would get me an extra window in case I break another. The company who made my window is named Traco. I don't don't know the pricing yet as they are closed untill the 5th of Jan. I'll decide after getting prices.

Cheers....Coffeeman
