I've got an older friend that like to bird hunt with a browning A-5 12ga. it is hanging on ejection.. IE. he fires, and it won't eject. he's using 3" and high brass. ( says it really doesn't like 2 3/4 shells ).

I haven't used a browning auto in a long time due to horrible ejection problems like this.. but need to help this guy get his adjusted cuz he just loves it.

I know under the hand gard are 3 rings.. and these make some difference on the spring.. etc.

Anyone know what i need to do to get it adjusted to eject reliably?

thanks in advance.

I am not familiar with this rifle, but would start out with the basics. Has it been thoroughly disassembled, cleaned, and lubed properly? Look for burs or rub marks while it is apart?

Most of the time when I have had issues like this with pistols, rifles etc, a thorough cleaning, and proper lubrication has helped. Otherwise, it is off to the gunsmith.

Afternoon Chris,
I dont have any real experience with Brownings' A-5, but I called my Uncle Dave up and asked him. He bought a couple of them back in 64 or 65, and sold them a number of years later. He really doesnt remember the specifics of the gun either. He basically repeated what Robert has stated allready. Break it down and clean properly. That was allways the biggest issue with shooting doubles with any of my Remington 1100's, and occassionally replacing the o-ring also. Sorry I cant be of more help ! He did say they were a great gun when working properly !

I've got an old one at home that was given to me by (oddly enough) my Uncle Dave. I've read through the manual and although I don't remember the specifics, I do know that the placement of those metal rings with respect to the spring make a difference. I bet you could get ahold of a manual by contacting Browning or searching the internet.

These guys are correct, you can stack the rings a certain way to shoot primarily light or heavy loads and make the recoil easier. Also I believe there is a lever on the side that can be tripped to make it fire one shot only I think. I never was much of an A5 user or fan so i don't know alot but I do know about the rings.

If I told you about the rings I'd be guessing. It's been a long time since I messed with any setups. Seems like my old A-5's had a sticker in the forstock explaining the ring set up.

I can say my 3" A-5 doesn't like 2 3/4" shells either, but if it's not autoloading with 3" shells it probably just needs cleaning.

You're welcome.

As I stated before in other posts on the subject, the Auto 5 is a clean shooter if the friction rings are in the right location for the brass to be fired. I know it's kind of a pita to have to keep going back and forth, but it really only takes a second and the reward is no jams.

Hope all turns out well. Let us know how the hunt went:)
