I want to convert my 6' Bush Hog to use a hydraulic motor so it can be mounted on the front of my Komatsu 21 or 31. How do I determine what size hydraulic motor I will need to do this?

I think you'd have to find out how much hydraulic flow in gallons per minute (GPM) and at what PSI you have available on your machine, first.

2nd, you'd figure out how many RPMs your brush hog operates at. The PTO probably turned at 540RPM, but some are different.

Now that you know what GPM and PSI you have out of your machine's hydraulics, you can determine what size motor you'll need to get it to turn at 540RPM.

Then go to the Surplus Center website and use their hydraulic calculator. Plug in your numbers, and it should tell you what size motor you need.

Looks like the rough math is 1HP per GPM. The 6’ brush hog is probably made for something like 30-40HP machines. Even if half of that is used to propel the tractor you are still looking at say a 15-20HP motor to properly spin the blades.

That’s my SWAG anyway....
