Is there suppose to have oil in the gearbox that sit on top of the brush hog? This is where the pto shaft mates to the hogs gearbox. If so, what type? I opened up what seemed to be a bolt that would be used on a oil pan and it was dry.

Ive been using this for about 4hrs total, and it has always seemed to be loud to me. This is my first experience with this kind of equipment so I didnt have anything to compare it to.

I use 80-90 wt in mine-depends on how cold it is-you could probably use a 30 wt non detergent oil also.

I suppose something different may exist, but all the ones I'm familiar with should have 80W-90 or 85W-140 gear oil in the gearbox. A lighter weight oil, such as motor oil, would certainly be better than nothing, but it would also be more likely to leak out the lower seal. And of course, if the lower seal leaks the gear oil out, I've known of folks pumping the gearbox full of grease, but I wouldn't recommend it at all.

I believe you will find, if you check from where you go it, that it will call for 80W 90. At least most of them use that weight. And fill it to where it starts to run out of the hole, is how most of them are. If you take a wire and reach in the hole with it, you may very well find that it is only a little low, and not clear out. At least we hope so, as running it clear dry for any amount of time, could hurt the bearing in the lower end of it.
