Can anyone take a shot at what's going on here? I used the brush hog about 30 minutes and noticed a pool of oil forming on the deck. Looking at the motor with the PTO running I could see little droplets of oil being flung from the top shaft (just below the mounting bracket). The couplings are completely dry, so it's not from there.

Here's a picture. And another picture.

You should be able to see the shiny streaks of flying droplets if you look closely... and of course notice the lovely pool that has formed on the deck.

I'll be calling PT in the morning... will report.

I know nothing about PTs but I will take a shot

On my JD cutter there is a vent on top from the factory it was slightly overfilled? so the first couple of runnings some fluid came out the top leaving a greasy spot on the gearbox lid. Checked the level and it's fine, no more coming out the vent.

Is there some sort of vent on the PT taht could be the source.

i would say from the pics that the hyd. motor is leaking. check the fittings to see if they are tight,if it is leaking around the shaft (between the motor and the coupler) it's a seal.
i think pt should get a good final inspection dept. going! when you find tools, low oil levels, leaks, dirt and metal in the carbs. fuel and hyd. tanks(i checked my 422 hyd. tank)full of black junk!!has to be metal it comes up on the magnet.
this isn't getting it! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gifthey at pt better wake up,they have a good product, after that is where it falls apart!

Yep, looks like a seal.

I previously worked in manufacturing. If you plot the Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF) on a new component, its heavily weighted toward the first couple of hours. What this means in practice is that its more common for stuff to fail, due to a manufacturing issue, in the first few hours of use. Once again...hang in there....

Just spoke with PT and the problem is a leaking seal in the motor. They've had a couple of others with this failure from a recent batch. They do claim to test their implements before shipping -- I guess this one just gave out once it encountered a real-world load. The only fix is to replace the motor and a new one is on its way.

My concerns about PT quality control still remain, but at least the repsonse from service was satisfactory this time. I do notice that in this case (unlike my fuel tank issue) the proper remedy does not cost them anything -- the mfg of the motor is on the hook, not PT.
