Need to purchase a new 72 inch brush hog. Had an MX6, let someone borrow it, came back with a snapped cutter shaft, not worth fixing.
Running it on a 55HP, 46 pto HP tractor. At least a 2 inch cut. In RI where we grow mostly rocks. Suggestions?

Woods Brush Bull! My three Woods rotary cutters have been the best I've ever owned or used.

Those shafts breaking on deere mowers is just plain common!

Thanks, I'll look into them. I've read that the Deere shafts snap, and until it happened. i didnt think much of it, however, looking at the shaft, it looks like the shaft was brittle the way it snapped.

My buddy works for a bigger farm and theirs snapped a couple months ago, the idiots went out and bought another deere cutter! DOH!

Light duty and medium duty Rotary Cutters have a Class 3 driveline.

Heavy duty Rotary Cutters have a Class 4 driveline.

Somewhere in the manufacturers published specs this information will be provided.

Shop for a Rotary Cutter with a Class 4 driveline.

Could be Woods, could be Bush Hog brand, could be Brown, start by determining drive line capacity.

46 PTO horsepower is ample to power a 72" heavy duty Rotary Cutter which will have a Category 4 driveline. You could purchase one increment wider and still have sufficient motive power.

99% of brush mower damage comes from the operator cutting more than its capable of handling. Many break mowers then claim “I was only cutting grass”.

Let’s stop with imaginary the Deere brand bashing.….
If it’s an MX mower which isn’t designed for much more than thick grass or light brush, you will break it on heavy brush, rocks, etc. It’s their lightest duty cutter.

The Deere CX are the toughest brush cutters you’ll ever use.
Neither of mine have broken even after striking boulders, logs, fence posts or concrete in 12 years of use.

I have an Atlas MD685. It's ok and I think was $1900 when I got it, but the have gone up the past couple of years. I've only had minor issues like replacing the drive-in zerks. It didn't come with a manual or customer support. It is heavy and I like the 2 tail wheels.

Bush hog 286. Over twenty five years old. Cut, plowed, chipped trees, beat stumps, cracked rocks and still going. Many sets of blades and bolts. Gearbox has never leaked and original driveline. Bought a newer used 286 to put into service when I sell this one. Newer model is built heavier.
Every manufacturer makes several models and duty levels.

Imaginary? There's been plenty of deere cutters here right on this forum with broken shafts, all of them broke the same way. Do you really think they are all imaginary??

The place my buddy works at, he's no idiot and he said the mower has not been abused, in fact it broke when they put the Mc Cormick CX100's pto in gear, like all the others I've heard about, he says it looked like the shaft was over hardened.

deere has a problem, they should be fixing the MX6's for FREE. Just because you haven't had problems with yours, doesn't mean all the others are abusing theirs!

BTW, how many Woods Brush Bulls do you hear about with broken shafts?? Do you think only john deere mowers hit rocks, stumps and heavy brush??
