Hi,

Will a brush mower cut golf course fairway rough - approximately 4" high with a fairly uniform appearance?

A brush mower is significantly cheaper than a gang mower
intended to just cut this grass.

Which models and manufacturers produce a good product?

I was hoping to buy a john deere or a brush hog.

Your input is appreciated.

I think you would be better off with a finish mower. A little nicer cut the a brush hog, but not as good as gaing mowers.

I'll second that about the finish mower over the rotary cutter. The 3pt mount will have the RC bouncing, dipping and scalping if the tractor encounters any rough ground. The finish mower rides on the ground and follows the terrain (somewhat) independently of the tractor. Gang mowers give a great cut but unless they are very heavy they can get jammed with sticks and make for a long job stopping to clear the jam.

The rotary cutter should do fine for 4" cutting. It will look maintained, but not like a lawn. I haven't experienced any serious uneven cutting or scalping with my 3-point cutter. Keep the blades reasonably sharp and they do a decent job.
