Yesterday, the wife and I set out to remove all of the plantings around a farmhouse we are renovating. The previous owners had planted shrubs, trees, and such right up against the foundation, all the way around the house.
This included around twenty or so boxwoods that had grown to 8 or 9 feet high.

We used this:

BrushGrubber | Heavy Duty Clump Grubber

What a time saver! Well worth the $76 (Amazon). Hooked that sucker around the giant boxwoods (fun crawling under them), and wife pulled them out of the ground and drug them to a brushpile.
Dont get me wrong, the big boxwoods took some coaxing, but it sure was quicker than cutting and then trying to dig up the roots.

It's funny - the description says "for ATV and UTV" use. I'm thinking the lawyers wrote it. Why? It's more than tough enough to stand up to a 30-40 horse tractor.
But - when hooked to the base of a stubborn tree, you can lift the front tires off the ground if you have the tractor end hooked too high.

Anyway - a very handy, inexpensive accessory if you need to pull up shrubs, bushes, and small trees.:thumbsup:

Interesting chain design - but I wonder if that's a typo in their ad; I can't imagine how 3 strands of 1/4 inch chain on an ATV could be expected to grub out a 21 inch diameter tree!

yeah, "Works on clumps of brush and small trees up to 1.75 ft diameter" is the type of sentence that makes an English major cry.
A 21" inch diameter clump of Forsythia - absolutely- .
a 21" tree? uh, ok.

Looks the same as the one I bought 2 years ago at Northern Tool. Works very well on clumps or brush and such. Even better if you can get someone else to crawl under there and hook it up! The cross links keep it from slipping up the clump when you pull.

THAT^^^ made me laugh! I can relate. Getting chokers on downed tree trunks is enough crawling around for me! Before getting a choker (I'm slow to figure things out!) I was "pushing" chain- ugh! At least with the choker cables there's some rigidity.

You could also make yourself a hook. Slide it under the log, hook the chain/choker, and then pull it under. A real work saver.




I have seen those grub hooks and wondered if they were worth it - it is nice to know they really work. Thanks for posting.

That is good. I am glad you have all the situations covered. Maybe someone else will find the idea of a choker grab hook a handy thing.
