So, now I know what a buck fight sounds like.
I was home alone all day yesterday, Saturday, and took advantage of that to learn the fine art of jackhammering. I spent from 9AM until almost 3PM breaking up about 30 feet of sidewalk. I bet I could do it again in about 3 hours or less, but as with most things there is a way to do it right and a way to waste time. Anyway, about 8PM I was celebrating having finished that job with the help of some Bully Porter and waiting for my wife and son to get home. I had opened the garage door, thinking they’d be along any minute, and I heard a weird clicking noise down the driveway. I put in a river birch along the drive three years ago, and the deer have done it some damage by rubbing their antlers on it, so I grabbed my trusty spot light to see if Bambi was at it again. There was nothing at the tree, but just then wife and son pulled into the drive about 300 feet from the house and just stopped. There’s a little dip there, so I couldn’t see what they could, but two bucks jumped into my view and took off across the field. Nice antlers. Son says one was down and the other one was going at him pretty hard when they interrupted the play, so perhaps dominance had already been established.
We’ve got lots of deer, but I don’t think we’ve seen two antlered deer at the same time before. The clicking I heard must have been pretty impressive because I was at least 100 yards from the scene.
