Backhoe bucket woes

Hi I just bought a ford 420 backhoe. I need a smaller bucket for it! Dose it have to be for a 420 or will other brands work? Any info would be great! Im having a hard time finding information on this machine! Thanks again!

Most of the Newer and older Ford Buckets would inter change. Im curious to why you want a smaller bucket. I have made a few overthe years form mine and freinds. SOmetimes they can be found at salvage yards.

I would like one for digging a trench for pipeline and for digging up tree roots! I don't know if it would help on the tree part or not tho? Would it help or not? I've got a area with a bunch if trees bout six inches round and there all about two feet apart!

I know what you mean but with the price of scrap steel they cost so much even for bad buckets. One guy got a 18" bucket for digging in rocks for his Ford backhoe that weights 3x of my 24" bucket that had never been used used for only $150 but those are the odds of winning a lottery.

Some say when you are digging in heavy clay soils you have to beat the dirt out of narrow buckets but i only have a 24" hoe bucket. Now that I have the thumb I like the width but a 12" would require less break out force I would think when cutting roots.

Yeah im really new to backhoes! I found a few im craigslist around me for sale for a reasonable price but there all for case backhoes didn't know if they would work or not!

I have another question why is there to different places to pin the top of the bucket where the bucket curl cylinder attaches? There only about four inches apart!?

Don't give up on finding buckets... Keep checking Craigslist, and check surrounding cities, as far as you're willing to travel to get one. Even a search on Ebay, within a certain mileage radius. Some may actually find you... A buddy of mine asked me last summer if I'd be interested in a 12" and 24" for my Case. Nothing wrong with the 12", and the 24" needs a new bottom. I asked how much, and he said $50.00... I asked each..?? He said for both, or he was going to scrap them... He has a Ford hoe, so no use to him. I gave him $60.00, and we were both happy...

As for the two holes. The lower hole will allow the bucket to rotate back far enough, if you want to like sheer straight down a wall, straight behind you, without extending the boom & stick all the way. The other will let you curl up closer to the boom, probably for looser material, and clinch things against the stick, if needed.
