Buggered PTO Shroud on MX5 Advise please

I beat up that two piece plastic unit put on the tractor end of the PTO shaft. It's rather bent and I didn't have time to fully evaluate the condition.

Do I really need it or can I remove it? It's really annoying to get around when I'm trying to hook the shaft to the tractor.

I did the same thing on my finish mower. I'm no Lawyer, but we never had those as a kid on the farm. I just left mine off.
