hey all --

-- i am getting excited about spring -- :D

i am looking at renting a terex 760 (80 hp) with a 3-1/4 yard bucket to bring a BUNCH of clay up from my pond dig to the front of the lot --

-- i will first scrape the topsoil in to a pile on the designated site, and then i want to use the clay to make a berm -- namely, to block my neighbor's house -- !!

i will eventually pine tree it, etc. --

-- my question though, who here has made berms, and what experience do you have with "okay, that's tall enough" --

-- also, how wide did you make them? there's some weird ratio of width to height --

-- let me know if you can, and always, i love pictures!

You sure must hate the view of your neighbors house!!! Any pictures of what it looks like? :D

I have a fairly large berm on my land. The US Army had it built in 1942 as part of a rifle range. This one is the 300 yard shooting position of Rifle Range #4. Every hundred yards there is a berm to keep the soldiers perfectly lelel when target practicing. I've removed the impact berm and the 100 yard one so far, and have started on the 200 yard one. I'm keeping the one in the pictures.

It's 600 feet long, 20 feet wide at the top and in places, 45 above the ground below. It's perfectly flat and goes straight out into the trees. It's the weirdest thing, but also very unique.

1942? I'll bet those trees weren't there when that built that berm.

My neighbor and I are going to build a small one as an impact area on his property. Probably about 10-15 feet long and maybe 6' high.

Where I live with the building boom and the additional traffic noise people are putting small berms in the front of their homes to reduce the road noise. They are usually not straight, but with curves in them and at anywhere from 5 to 8 feet tall. The big thing is the placement of the pines, hemloks or whatever you like planted along with other low growing vegetation that requires very little maintenance. It will improve your property value if done correctly. :)
