Gentlemen, I'm a fairly good welder for a hobby welder. I've built everything from BBQ pits to a steel cow on skids my kids used to rope. I'm about to start on a 30"X6'X5/16" BBQ pit with a 30"X2"X2'firebox. I like to build with steel.

I look at the price of bolt on toothbars and figure I can build one fairly easily and much cheaper than I can buy. I've seen threads here where folks have used bar stock for teeth but I would like some factory looking teeth on mine, like the teeth on the Markham toothbars. Can teeth like these be bought somewhere online or can I find them at maybe a supply house for Bobcats or heavy equipment? For flatbar it looks like 2.5"X1/2" would work. Any advice on building one?

Thanks for any help, Mark

(888) 406-6262 Hensley industries in Dallas, Texas. I live in Kamloops, B.C. Canada and the company I work for sells their bucket products. not sure if they sell to the direct public, but they would be able to tell you who does in your area.

I made my own toothbar. Used 1/4" thick by 3" wide flat steel obtained from the scrap local yard for the base plus scrap I had laying around. I bought the teeth from a local dealer that works on dozers and backhoes. They had all different sizes. Paid about $70 for 6 with replaceable teeth. Figure I have about $120 into it.

Thanks for the replies guys.

DestructoD, 6 posts in 2 years? Heck man, I'm honored you picked mine. I'll check them out.

George, Have you used the toothbar much? Has 3X1/4" worked ok? I thought most were built on 1/2" stock. I know nothing about toothbars, that's why I ask.

Kossetx,

I haven't used it a lot but have used it on hard packed runner crush driveways, Old blacktop drives, pulling up cement sidewalks etc. and haven't broke a tooth yet or bent the 1/4 x 3. I don't make a living using it either, its just for my own use and a few jobs for neighbors. For my purposes so far it has worked well. I am thinking of building another using thicker plate. A friend of mine just bought a tractor and wants a toothbar. I told him I'd sell him mine if he wanted it. If he does I'll build another bar with a thicker 7/16" x 4' plate.

Mornin George,
Very nice job !!!

Kossetx,
I dont know how they would work or if they would be strong enough, but if your in farm country I have come across barrels of discarded rock guards for sickle mowers. The farmers just toss them after the ledger plates wear out. They might be fine for light duty stuff, and I dont have a clue if anyone has ever tried this :) Just a thought!
