Building a charcoal BBQ

   / Building a charcoal BBQ #21
Last week I read that a bill is going through the CA legislature now that would ban wood burning stoves (the type that uses wood pellets for heating).

For smoking meat I just use charcoal briquettes and water soaked wood (oak, cherry, etc) chips to make smoke. I'll continue doing this until the smoke police show up in my backyard and make me stop.

I can sure understand that, I have family out there and they said they cant use their fireplace any more. Last time I was out that way working, I'd rather smelled a BBQ or fireplace over the thick smog, carbon smell.

That will REALLY be nice with some Grapes planted at each post & let them grow up over top in summer for extra shade! might attract bugs & birds but would make it look great & get some good grapes for making better wine ;) :D

Good idea. I might try that. I like grape arbors. My grandparents in Wisconsin had a nice arbor in the backyard.

Right now I have a dozen California Concord vines going on vertical shoot positioning (VSP) trellises on the East side of the house. They're 7 years old and producing a good crop of table grapes.

My buddy has a 4' X 4" 3/8" steel sheet we toss over the fire pit for steaming ears of corn.. we keep a hose near and mist the steal once it gets hot, then cover the corn with wet burlap, and keep the steam going...
One night I thing I ate 9 ears, likely more than I eat in a summer..

A pot of melted butter and a BBQ brush along with some seasons. old bay and such near goes real good.

Once I saw a fire pit where the fella used bicycle sprockets and chains to rotate the grates.. It was pretty big though, more like a firehouse or church type festivity. It really cut down on the flipping though.
I wish I could recall how it was constructed..

if you add a propane burner in the bottom you could do hot smoking/grilling while still having the option of cold smoking.
As far as fixed grilling, what about doing a fire pit, and finding some perforated metal you could weld rebar along the lenght of it and use the firepit for cooking. When I was young and our church had bbq's they would just use cinderblocks for the outside and fill with charcoal, and use rebar with fencing to hold in the chicken, they used two one on the top one on the bottom to make flipping them easier.

Sharn Jean wants me to build an arbor over our patio, but instead of grapes, wants to try growing hops. That would give me an excuse to make some home brew!

Hops are easy to grow i have 8 different varieties growing. Just watch the Japanese Beetles they really like them and then seem to bring powdery mildew with them. I have a few sprays from gardens alive that treat both. BTW if your going to get hops do it now, most places sell out fast they are preordering at most places like morebeer.com
