Building a New Deck

Hey! A Border Collie right? Is it a purebred? We've got a 5 yr. old Border and she's probably as smart as a 5 yr. old kid.

Looks like you have a good start on the deck, what kind of decking material are you going to put down?

Well I see he's using Trex now that I read the opening post. Sometimes I read these threads like I read instructions. I saw the Border Collie and rather than completely post off subject I thought I'd throw in a question about the deck. Hope you didn't hurt yourself laughing /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

So this post has been a long time coming. Too many computer & work issues to discuss. NoTresspassing - it is a border collie, but not a pure bread. He is a great dog none the less. As far as the decking material goes we are using Trex Accents. It has a faux wood grain stamped into it and is saddle in color.

After getting all of the framing done it was time to temporarily set the posts. I had to add a little more framing for stability and used 2 7" carriage bolts to secure each of the posts.

Attaching the boards proved to be a pain in the back, literally. I think I spend about four days in a bent over position. I did not want any screw holes in the material so I ended up using a product called EB-TY.

Basically they are biscuits with a screw that goes into the middle of them. Each board needed to have biscuit joints cut on both sides. After the board was set into place, a EB-TY connector was used on each floor joist. It is a very time consuming process, but the results are nothing short of outstanding.

Still attaching boards... Since the deck boards are parallel to the home and the span was greater than 32 feet I decided to run a board running perpendicular to the home in the center rather than butting the boards together.

Being bent over for days on end attaching deck boards has completely ruined my back. I now walk around hunched over like a primitive man. I told the boss lady that I feel like the missing link. Unfortunately she thought it was pretty funny and now "Link" is now my new pet name.

Finally the deck is complete! I can now stand upright (although I am still referred to as Link /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif).
