I have read with great interest all the various threads on individual projects, with the result that I've learned and appreciated the talents of the various contributors to TBN.
For many years, I have had an avid interest in stone buildings, and have wanted to build a stone something over that same time frame. My father built a stone castle for his wifes grandkids some 25-30 years ago with minimal planning and a weak foundation - but it's still standing, though the wooden roof beams have rotted out and started to collapse into the interior.
My wife and I were in the UK and Ireland last year, which further reinforced my desire to build with stone. This year, after numerous promises to 'finish the back yard this summer', I got to work completing several projects that needed to be done. I also need to put down new sod with the re-configured yard, so the only option for a stone shed was include it on the project list.
Well folks...I finally got started with this project...hesitantly perhaps, but started just the same. The standard drill of digging down about 6 inches, to well packed soil - which is clay here - then replacing with 6 inches of crushed limestone - packing and preparing for the concrete pad was all done as stated - hestitantly. This is the first time I've built anything from stone other then a rubble stackstone wall about 8 inches high...so please bear with me since this is a learning experience as much as fun project for me.
Local building bylaws allow you to put up a 100 square foot shed without a permit being required, with 5 foot allowances from any property lines. Using a 6 foot allowance (it's a stone building and won't be moved) as my starting measurement. There is also a maximum 'structure foot print' allowed on any residential site, but I am well within those numbers - even with the 24x24 shop we built 2 years ago. I mention these things in the event someone else feels like starting a project like this - as suggestions on what should probably be reviewed at the very least.
Oh yeah...I was originally going to build a shed measuring 8x12 - well under 100sqft. As I got underway, I realized how much material I'd need, from stone to cement, forms to rebar, and the expense was going to be way over my budget of $1000. Why the $1000 budget you ask - because stick built building supply company kits of equal or greater size run about that price up here...and the plastic ones though they do the job they are designed for, just plain suck as far as I'm concerned. No imagination. My point is that I finally whittled this project down to a 7x8 shed - storey and a half - I think and I hope to have it done by mid-September.
I've included some starter pics - since photos speak volumes - and I'm sure most would prefer photos rather then my ramblings...
