Guess somebody hit this poor fella. He was laying in the middle of our front yard last week but there was so much snow, I couldn't get down there to haul him out.

Decided to give him a "proper" burial in the woods...

Pallet forks came in handy again.

Unfortunately, this happens all the time around our place.

Could never understand why some states have laws against picking up fresh roadkills, especially venison. We have to report any that we keep to the MNR for a permit and often get one a year. Between those and the one that dies from lead poison during the hunt we eat pretty good all year.....

I usually find one or two dead deer on our property each year. It borders a highway. Also, several times a year I run over some dead turkeys when brush hogging. You don't see them until the feather fly! :p

Sounds like you need some coyotes down there to keep things tidy...

We have them, bobcats too. For some reason, they've stayed away from this carcass. Maybe because it was in an exposed area and too close to the house? So far, the only thing I've seen picking at it was some large ravens.

Now that it's back in the woods, it will probably be picked clean pretty fast.

Same here, my son was a Police Officer for several years and got any fresh road kills or because he was a country boy was dispatched to finish one off with his knife or gun. He is still on their call list and gets one every once in a while.

I hit a deer one time with my old beater truck. Didn't do much damage, but knocked out the grill. When I saw how much they wanted for the "Ford" oval in the center of the grill, I decided to go back and try to find it.

While I was there, a guy drove up and said "Hey, do you want that?" and he was pointing at the deer. I helped him load it into his truck and was glad that someone was able to get some good out of the situation. Probably had a family to feed.

Never did find the grill part though. I think they wanted $50 for it.

Road kill is legal in TN. That is, if you can get it away from the possum. :D

NH requires a report and a tag. Tag doesn't count against your hunting, just a means of declaring it wasn't a poached deer. Supposedly the state Fish and Game Department use those numbers for "managing" the state herd. Personally, I figure if there are so many they're getting hit on highways, that means there's a surplus population that needs thinning.

I had to bury one Saturday too. Usually call the county and they will pick them up, but it was a three day weekend, and I didn't want to leave it that long - a buzzard was already staking it out. He somehow got about 40 yards from the road towards my house with a severely broken back leg before dropping. First one in a couple of years, they don't seem to cross the road near my house as much any more, one year there were three in 8 days. Luckily he was a small button buck so not to hard to bury with my FEL. No backhoe.
