If you can give me the diameter of the input shaft and the diameter of the output shaft and also how many splines on the output shaft plus, is the input shaft round/smooth or splined. I should be able to fix you up. Ken Sweet

Ken,

I have the following info:

20110216_48.jpg

Four bolt pattern: From my measurements I'm seeing 5" X 10"

Until I can get the stuck knukle off of the shaft, I can tell you wheter it's splined or not ... From what I see at the present it's not ...

I'll get more info on this as I start to take it apart ... "Need more daylight"

If it is 5 X10 inch bolt pattern, I can't help. All after market boxes that I see are on a square mount pattern. Probably going to be a high dollar Bush Hog order. Ken Sweet

Or a little handy fab work if he is capable and you can get him one with the right sized shafts:thumbsup:

YUP! That can be done too! ..

Will have to pull the complete gear box out :confused2: and then do some measuring - weld in brackets for the new gear box ...

I have a couple of rusted out bush hogs with good gearboxes but I THINK they all have splined input shafts. Before paying high dollar, look for something in the used market. I will try to remember to check when I get home Friday.

Did clean the input shaft off of mine .. Harden Grease that looked solid. After almost using a chisel - it was splined ...

So it's a splined input .. not sure what's below to the cutting blades ..
This Bush Hog is a 7’ cutter rated at' 40 hp minimum up to 107 hp .. not sure of the year.
Took the input flange off and found the gears are shot .. Input flange housing is cracked ... Figured whomever had it before had to have hit something really solid to cause that type of damage.

Did find an exploded view drawing of the gearbox .. this one is a bit unusual compared to the type today..

Looks familiar, worth taking a walk to the back with a tape.

If you find one let me know .... Kind of curious on what it will take (cost) to get my old unit going again ..

Thanks!

Measure the 2 shafts and count the splines and post it here.

Will do ...

I know the input shaft (one from the PTO Shaft Knuckle) is a standard 540 splined shaft .. Length unknown

Output shaft to the stump jumper - from the diagram shows to be a possible taper shaft with a key and held in place with a nut ....

The other issue I have is the gearbox does not mount directly to the pan of the cutter. It has a standoff (bad idea) that looks like approx 8" ... I will take a pic and measure that as well ..

It will be a little time before I can flip over the cutter to remove the stump jumper/blades ...
Currently we are going through mud season right now after all the snow melt .. not to mention we are expecting rain for Sunday and Monday and temps in the 30's.. which is a real bummer...

Tapered shaft is normal. Spline count could vary
Stay dry

I noticed the high rise gearbox im the pictures.

The one that I had in mind is a Bush Hog 206 and the bolt pattern is a 5 x 10 if you stretch the ten a little. I think it really is closer to a 9.75 realistically. The bottom of the gear box is actually somewhere around 9" from the deck, if you realize the deck is pretty much rusted away, and I had to approximate that distance. I am sure if it is really close, it probably is the same gearbox. Can't see them making two that close together and it not being the same. Let me know what you think as far as what your looking for.

Hi Sandman ..

YUP! That's the one .. Did a rough measurement and it might be 9.75 ....

It's one ungly looking gearbox .. LOL! ....

Is yours broken?

Parked for rusted out deck. Stump jumper rusted out from sitting on the beach. Don't think there is anything wrong with the gearbox on any of the four mowers in the picture. I would prefer to guarantee it, but only on inspection, not after installation, for obvious reasons. I would expect you will need or at least should expect to replace the seals as it has been sitting a while.
PM a phone number and a good time to call and we can discuss options.

Opps, there are five mowers in that picture...

Sandman, from reading this post it sounds like you have quite a few of these gearboxes? would you be willing to part with any of them? from what you are talking about above you have what they call an old "roundback" gearbox. it should have the numbers 12492 in big numbers on the side of the gearbox, should be easy to read as the numbers were made into the casting of the mold. these are very old gearboxes as i am sure you are aware, but more inportantly they dont make them anymore nor do they make any replacement parts (not even through bush hog). if your gearbox has those numbers on the side of it i would seriously like to talk to you. i have a 12ft bush hog with 2 of these gear boxes, however i have one broken output shaft going to the stump jumper. if it wasnt for the fact that the rest of the bush hog is in good shape i would just scrap it but i would really like to fix it. if you would be willing to part with one of the gear boxes i am really just looking for the output shaft and it is really easy to get out if you have the gearbox out. please let me know. thanks
