"Red" is not much to go on. The BushHog brand is red...so are KingKutters made before the new yellow paint came out earlier this year.

Any serial # labeling on the cutter or gearbox? Something in the number might give a clue to the mfg.

Also, local vendors might be able to ID the unit at a glance. Take the cutter, or take a picture.

As everyone is saying, there are tons of resources online to look for your parts and also many manufacturers. I'm attaching an illustrated parts diagram of a King Kutter 40hp gearbox.

If you can identify your cutter, I'm sure we can help. If you can't identify it or get a picture, you could search for months before you find out what brand it is.

If you are interested, I do know from first hand experience that many gearboxes from different manufacturers are interchangeable. It just depends on the design of your cutters blades and stump jumper (if it has one) and the spline type. It's also critical to know if the gearbox is 40hp, 60hp, 80hp, etc..

Your toplink attach point (long slot) looks just like my Howse. Also your gearbox looks like it was painted black. That's also the way my Howse is. Yours looks like the 300, 350, 400, 500 series of cutter.

Here is a link to the Howse website major parts for your cutter. There is also a phone number on their home page and I bet they can help you. I think that entire gearbox is about $175, but the internal gears may be a lot less.

we bought a used bush-hog - an old Woods - and are getting it ready and want a little information about checking the gearbox oil and adding more if needed. Is there a site that might have manuals or is this so simple we don't need an illustration?

thanks.

Should be pretty simple. There are probably two ports on there, one large one near the top, and one small one on the side. The top one may have a "breather" cap on it that allows overflow which you work off by pulling up and side to side to loosed. After you've removed that, you should be able to open up the large plug there for filling. Open up the side plug and fill with 90W gear oil until it runs out that side port. Replace the plugs and go to work.
You should also assure that all the bolts all over the mower are good and tight for which you may need to have the foot pound ratings, obtainable by emailing Woods. See their site at www.woodsequipment.com John

John really covered the oil fill routine very well. If you want a picture, most of these gearboxes are very similar and the image of the King Kutter gearbox has an illustration in the lower left corner that shows what John described for refilling the gearbox. As far as the other Woods specific parts and info, I think the link John gave you is the best. They would probably also be able to supply you with an owner's manual.
