So I tried out my brand new Kodiak 8ft pickup style bush hog yesterday on some fairly deep grass. I used it for about 30 minutes. Afterwards I felt of the three gearboxes. The center and the right box was barely warm however the left box was much "warmer" if not slightly "hot". I could lay my full hand on it but it was a bit uncomfortable. I didn't try but doubt I could have put the inside of my forearm on it for more than a second or so. Just trying to give you guys a feel for how hot it was. I wouldn't be concerned as much if they were all about the same temp but with one being so much warmer than the other two has me a little worried. I understand there is a break in period... am I being overly concerned?

What do you guys think?

I would check the oil and make sure it's full. It could just be over-tightened from assembly.

Forgot to say I checked oil in all before ever rotating it.

Did you mow in a counter clockwise pattern? That would put your left side in full cut mode all the time, which could warm the gear box more.

It does seem odd they'd be so much difference.

FYI: Buy an infrared thermometer (they sell for $10-$30, or even $500 if you want). Point and shoot; and they'll tell you exactly how hot the surface temperatures are. A very handy tool.

Run it a few cuts to get it broken in and then see what it does after ya get a few hours on it.

yes it was the box with full load of grass

I'd test it in the other direction to see if the heat follows to the other gear box. It's probably normal and will likely get a little better once it's broken in too.

Wonder why the "fully cut mode" middle gearbox is just as cool as the outside gearbox?

So you bought it new...
Given any thought to call the manufacturer? they will probably have the best answers.
