I unwisely lent my JD 4710 with an LX5 cuttter to a friend. He sheared the shear bolt (non clutch style) and continued to run cutter.
I now cannot get the yoke collar to spin free of the gearbox shaft. Is it possible that the heat of the collar spinning around shaft "welded" one to another? Is there a simple fix?

Likely there was some galling of the soft bolt as it spun.

You may have to block the stump jumper or blades using a 2x4 and then use a tire iron thru the yoke to bar it over untill you can line up the holes and drive the slug out.

If that wont do it.. keep the stump jumper blocked and try a pipe wrench on the yoke.. if still nothing try adding a bit of hammer to see if you can get it to tap around.. an air hammer would help vibrate this loose.

Lastly.. if it is being a real bugger.. I'd disassemble the u-joint and get the shaft out of there and see if i could use a puller on it. ( remember to remove any snap rings there designed to hold the smooth yoke and shaft together.... If that fails, use a die grinder or angle grinder and cut 95% thru the yoke on one side then bar over ( unblock stump jumper ) and cut 95" thru the yoke on that side.. then use a big cold chissle to split the yoke off the shaft. Get a new yoke and reassemble tot he u-joint and shaft. Use emory paper to clean up the gearbox shaft. reinstall yoke and snap ring, and new soft shear pin.. perhaps add a healthy smear of never seize ont he shaft for a little extra insurance...

Oh yeah.. really reconsider loaning out your tractor. i've told all my friends that I'd be glad to show up and do some minor tractor jobs FOR them. There are a few things i don't loan out... My wife and my tractor are at the top of the list... Theay are both expensive and difficult to replace.. (wink)...

Soundguy; You hit the nail on the head. My hearing gets real bad when people ask to borrow things they don't value. Craftsman tools are good tools..... but they are not replacements for snap on sets that are mysteriously lost. My corvette tires do not need to be checked for full width positraction impressions either. I can wreck enough equipment myself.

It's welded on, if it's not turning freely.
That's why shear bolts have grease joints, so when the bolt breaks they spin freely. (and continuing to run it does nothing).
You might try heating it up (with a torch) and the pry bar trick, but you're going to have to get them to line back up again.
They should have a grease joint, see if you can grease it and then heat it to move.

One approach to try before you destroy the yoke might be to attach a come along (powerpull--goes by different names) around the yoke and to something solid up front. Put a lot of tension on the come along. Then move behind the yoke and use a big hammer and punch or shaft to try to move it forward.

One time I needed to unstick a PTO shaft on a mower that had sat outside unused for 15 yr. The male/female shafts had rusted together. I took the shields off sprayed as much penetrating oil and grease into it, and still it would not budge.

Out of desperation, I hooked the come along to the front of the tractor and to the front of the PTO shaft. Tightened it up as much as I could move it, then hammered on the rear of the yoke. It FINALLY came loose.

You might be able to salvage it......

I would never loan my tractor, but my wife that's a different story. I would have her packed and ready to go :)

Thanks guys, got it apart with a combination of comealong, pipewrench, pry bar and hammer. Yoke was grooved, managed to clean that up, working on cleaning up shaft now.
And now I know, my JD doen't leave the place where my payment coupons are mailed unless I'm operating it. All in all, I guess a fairly inexpensive lesson.

You're not the first one to do it and I am sure you won't be the last. I have a few people that want to use my tractor and I always tell them, I wish I could, but I just cannot afford to fix it if something was to go wrong. Almost in the same breath I let them know I would be glad to help them with the project and manage the tractor functions.

They seem to understand my concern, but one thing is for sure they are not paying for the tractor so it is just one of those things we are forced to deal with.

You can always come up with a story regarding the insurance aspect for the tractor and your fears that someone would get hurt and you would lose everything. This usually puts a bit of fear into the story and people will back off.

Glad you got it fixed. Oh, the lessons we learn.

im kind of confused, do the round shaft gear boxes, that round shaft that comes out of the gear box like the pinion shaft of a car rear end, that the drive shaft yoke goes over, does that shaft a have clip on the end that keeps the drive shaft from coming off at the gear box when the bolt is removed? thanks rob
