The tractor end of the PTO shaft for my bush hog has a slip ring against a spring that holds three steel balls in place to secure the shaft to the tractor. It goes on and the ring snaps in place, but comes off in operation. has anyone ran into this problem and did you find a fix? I'm thinking of changing the yoke out to one that uses a bolt to hold it in place.

Sounds like that spring is worn out. Time to replace the yoke.
I prefer the type of yoke that uses a spring loaded pin (locks in the PTO shaft groove). Just spray some lubricant on the pin when you grease the 'hog so it moves freely.

Try cleaning around the locking collar/coupling ring first. blow out with compressed air, & give it a good soaking in spray lube working the collar around and back and forth. If its got alot of crud built up under the locking ring, this could prevent fully locking.

If you end up replacing the yoke I would go with the twist collar locking type.
They are much eaiser to operate than the spring loaded pin and do not get bound up like the pins do.

Now, I prefer just the opposite...those spring loaded pins work great, but my twist type collar is a PITA...
Well, opinions and such are what make TBN great!

From a safety point of view, the twist lock would probably be safer than the pin, however, I like the old style pin for my own personal use. I just never get off the tractor with the PTO turned on. Ken Sweet

All good input, thanks, I'm going to clean it first and then re-lube. There is less than 100 hours on this shaft. It was also suggested that I pull apart the shaft and make sure that it is greased. Something to do with it hanging up and putting pull on the PTO.

Are your SURE you locked yours in place? You need to give it a tug to/fro after you slip it onto the shaft and it supposedly locks. I didn't do this one day, and mine came spinning off.
