Was mowing last fall and started clanking. Got out and looked - all the oil drained out of the gear box. Guess the seal blew out. How do I replace the seal. Also, best advice for changing blades.
If it started clanking, you probably have a bearing gone bad. Take the gear box off and take it apart. You may find the tapered bearings cheaper at a parts house (not the dealer). Get the numbers off of the cup and the bearing cone and see if they can match them up for you. The seal may have to come from the dealer. See if you can find a number on the seal to cross reference. Just take your time, and keep everything clean.
I guess you mean the Bush Hog SQ600. The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. I took the unit back to the dealer. Their theory was that a piece of wire or some such tore the seal. Anyhow, they wound up replacing virtually everything in the gear box. my total bill was $435. I had about 200 hours on it then. It has worked fine since then.
