Bush Hog SQ84 cutter

Anyone have experience with this cutter? I can get a used one for about $500. Does that sound like a reasonable price?

From what I know it has two blades, each blade has its own gearbox and it has two rear wheels instead of just one, I believe it is also lighter and shorter overall than the SQ72. I'll be using it with a NH TC35. Any feedback is appreciated.

For $500., if it doesn't need anything... absolute bargain...

However it's bigger... not smaller than the 72"...

Also you may have approached or went past your limit for a TC35, unless you're strickly using it to mow grass and not brush... and it's a heavy implement... have front weights and loader to keep the "nose" down...
{it should only have one gearbox on the Squealer series}

Great mower for that price. New they run close to 2000. I like them because they don't tend to scalp as much as full round decks and they don't stick to far back from the tractor. Depending on what you are mowing I think you are buying a handful and maybe more as far as your tractor is concerned.

I agree that it sounds like a bargain. John, according to their web site the SQ84T is available with a choice of single or double spindle. And it's wider, but shorter, than the 6' model. I'm not sure about the dimensions of the older models.

I assumed it was the standard 84... the T is very rare and between a finish mower and rough cut... and not as heavy, or as long... well someone hand me a towel please, to wipe this egg off my face... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

John - It is definately the two gearbox model, I may have the wrong model number though. It is also shorter than the 72" since it has two blades intead of just one. As I think about it though, I'm not sure if it is heavier or lighter than the 72". I may have been thinking more in terms that since it is shorter that the counter-weight effect wouldn't be as pronounced. I'll look into it a little further and keep you posted.

John - /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif is right! I just thought it would make a good rough cutter. I was originally thinking of getting a finish mower but the cost was prohibitive. If it gives a good 'in-between' type of cut I'll be ecstatic! It just needs cleaned up a little and maybe a little PM (preventative maintenance) and maybe sharpen the blades. Is sharpening these type of blades even possible?

Yes, I sharpened the ones on the last Bush Hog SQ48 so many times, I finally replaced them with new blades. So far I've only sharpened the ones on the Howse I now have once. Getting the blades off some of the brush hogs isn't too bad, and getting them off others is all but impossible./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif So a lot of folks sharpen them with an angle grinder without removing them. Of course you don't want them quite as sharp as the blades on a lawnmower; preferably leave a flat front edge of approximately 1/8". Of course if I were only mowing grass and weeds; no brush or woody material, then I'd sharpen them a little sharper.
