hello i have bush hog squaler sq480 4 foot trying to keep it matntained i have a box deal i think it is called a gear box how much oil and what kind of oil do i put in it it has a threaded plug on top and a drain plug on the side by the bottom i put i hose to measure it it is about 1/2 about the plug on side is that enough or do i fill it up more please help.

Usually top hole is breather, side hole is fill hole, pour in till it starts to run out .if my memory is correct 90 wt gear oil.

That's right. From the Bush Hog online manual:
"Gearbox - Check oil level by removing oil level
check plug on right side of gearbox. Add EP80W-90
gear oil if necessary to bring oil level to check plug
hole."gear oil if necessary to bring oil level to check plug

I can't say for sure, but I'd guess it's because the output shaft is a verticle shaft; i.e., straight down. Where could you put a drain plug in the gear housing? I sure don't know of any place it could be located that would allow you to drain it.

Some do. My Caroni 6' has one but my Ford 5' does not. I have only changed it once in the Ford and i just tip it up on its side and lean it against a tree with the FEL to service.
