Tractor
Kubota L2501HST
Hi, im new to the forum but having been viewing the site for a few years now. I am looking to buy my first tractor and wondering if this Kioti tractor will have enough hp for my needs. The main reasons for getting a tractor would be snow clearing, landscaping, moving around firewood, and acquiring firewood.

From what i have found on the web, i think this tractor would be more than capable of my needs with a 1200lbs+ loader lift, 60" bucket and reasonably good hydraulics.

So my concerns are if this tractor will be able to skid firewood and occasional logs. Here in Newfoundland we have fairly rough and hilly ground. My dealer sells all tractors with loaded rear tires(windshield wash). So is this tractor able to skid logs and firewood with this size engine (24.5hp) or will i run out of traction to the ground first?

Also, my father has a bx25d and i know this kioti tractor is on a larger frame but they are only 1.5hp apart in engine power. I have done a lot of research but is this tractor more of a tractor then it actually looks on paper?

I know a 3510 would be more capable but is it necessary for my application?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Nathan.

The best way to shop for tractors is to list your tasks first, then determine how much bare tractor weight you need to SAFELY accomplish your tasks. Bare tractor weight is a tractor specification easily found in sales brochures and web sites, readily comparable across tractor brands and tractor models.

For most tractor tasks greater chassis weight is more important than tractor horsepower. This tractor fundamental is difficult for people new to tractors to comprehend. It takes a 50% increase in bare tractor weight before you notice a significant tractor capability increase. It takes a 100% increase in bare tractor weight to elicit MY-OH-MY!

Heavier tractors have more tractive power pulling ground contact implements. Greater mass of heavy-chassis tractors increases tractor stability when transporting loads in the FEL bucket, the most rollover prone of routine tractor tasks. Heavier tractors have larger wheels and tires better able to bridge holes, ruts and downed tree limbs, yielding a smoother, less disturbing passage over rough ground.

Safe hillside operation demands more tractor weight than flat land operation. Heavier tractors have wider wheel spreads making heavier tractors less laterally unstable. Rear wheel spreads may be decreased or increased after jacking up the rear.

Shop your weight range within tractor brands. Budget will eliminate some choices. Collect a dealer brochure for each tractor model in your weight range. I spreadsheet tractor and implement specs, often a revealing exercise. I have a column for cost per pound.

Tractors under 3,000 pounds bare weight are offered in one configuration. Most, such as the high volume kubota standard L series, are sparely equipped to hit competitive price points. Others, such as the Yanmar YT235 and Kubota B2650/B3350 series, include enhanced productivity and comfort components.

Most tractors under 3,000 pounds bare weight are operated in residential applications on one to five fairly flat acres. These "residential tractors" fit in a typical garage.

Tractors over 3,000 pounds bare weight are generally offered in a utilitarian configuration and a deluxe configuration, on a common chassis. Deluxe kit enhances productivity and operating comfort ~~~ but you have to pay. Many tractors over 3,000 pounds bare weight are too tall to fit in a typical garage, even with ROPS folded.

Selling a used tractor is easy. Selling light implements in order to buy heavier, wider, implements for a heavier tractor you take a hit in depreciation. Passing time with multiple browsers is a pain. ((Ask me how I know.))

For most new to tractors a quality dealer, reasonably close, available for coaching, is important. Dealer proximity is less important to others, well experienced with tractors, who perform their own maintenance. My kubota dealer is six miles away. I feel my local dealer continues to add value to my equipment.

Horsepower is only a primary consideration operating PTO powered implements.

BUY ENOUGH TRACTOR.

For most tractor tasks greater chassis weight is more important than tractor horsepower. This tractor fundamental is difficult for people new to tractors to comprehend. It takes a 50% increase in bare tractor weight before you notice a significant tractor capability increase.

Horsepower is a primary consideration only when operating PTO powered implements.

The Kioti CK2610 is about 1,000 pounds/70% heavier than Kubota BX25d.

Tractors are geared low to PULL. Large rear wheels increase the ability to PULL. You will have no difficulty skidding heavy logs in 4-WD. With <25-horsepower, 2,700 pounds bare tractor weight and filled rear tires you will not lose traction under any 'normal' conditions.

You need a Three Point Hitch cross-drawbar to elevate logs slightly at the tractor, to keep logs fairly clean when skidding. Dirt dulls chainsaw saw chains in seconds. Less power is required to pull logs when entire length is not creating friction in ground contact. Slight elevation prevents logging chain abrasion against hard surface roads.

Have dealer set rear wheels wider than normal for better stability. Opt for HST transmission for rough ground work, rather than gear.

Thank you for the response. I am going to look at one today. I glad that this hp range will fit my needs. I may also look at Kubota L2501 but I am not a fan of the loader valve on the loader or the treadle pedal, but I will try it and see. Thanks.

Kioti CK2610 and Kubota L2501 weight and engine displacement are almost identical.

See which one is more comfortable to you.

It will be interesting to read how close they are in price.

Greetings Gigarift!

As the proud owner of a new ck2610, I can tell you that everything Jeff said is absolutely correct and also that the ck2610 can do everything you have listed with ease. You can also upgrade that loader to the KL4010 for some seriously increased loader capacity.

I think you will find the Kioti to have some great ergonomics and comfort.

As Jeff points out the BX25 does not compare with the 2610 at all as its a SCUT and the Kioti is a CUT. The L2501 is much closer. The BX only has a 0.9 L displacement while the L And the CK both have about 1.6L so more mass moving around in there. One would guess they would have much more torque. Lift is much higher too on the FEL on both of those. Almost double. The L and CK are much more tractor.

Was wondering about the loader upgrade, but seen others on the forum say that you would void warranty and that the dealer would not do the upgrade. So I never bothered asking but I will call my dealer to find out. I have so prices from the dealers for the Kioti CK2610, Kubota L2501 and a Mahindra 1526. I will post the prices later and thanks for all the help. I gets a bit confusing on paper compared to real life uses.

So i am now the owner of a Kubota L2501, i was really set on getting the Kioti 2610 but after visiting the dealers and reviewing the prices, there were some vast differences in prices.
All prices including fel, ssqa, 66" bucket, forks and 3rd function valve and in canadian dollars with taxes, financed.

Kubota L2501Hst $30888 + Land Pride BB1266 Box Scraper $493 + B5320 Ballast Box $0 + 50hr Service Kit $0
Kioti CK2610Hst $34524
Mahindra 1526 $35700

So all dealers were excellent and seem to offer great service. After doing a lot more research on the tractors and specs i realized that the Kubota had a lot more going for it, then shown on the brochure. It weighs just as much as the others, the loader is comparable once you look at the lift curve of all 3. Longest running dealer in the area, and best part availability. The price being $3000 affects my choice as well.
