One thing not sure has been explicitly brought up is that in addition to max towing weight, tongue weight, and max payload, vehicles also have a GVWR - Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, and GCWR - Gross Combined Weight Rating. GCWR is the whole enchilada.
For the Ford Transit platform, GCWR was 13,500 for the platform but GVWR ranged from 8,600 to 9,500 and max tow depended on engine, drive ratio etc. ranging from 5,000 to 7,500.

Our double axle trailer (for 4,000 lb boat) is 1,400 lbs. The double axle car trailer (surge brakes) we rented from UHaul was 2,200. OP clarified his trailer at 2,000 lbs."A double axle trailer is around 1,200 to 1,400"
Yah think?
My 14K equipment trailer weighs 3,300 lbs.
A 10K equipment trailer....maybe 2,300 lbs.
A 7K trailer.... maybe 1,800 lbs.
The OP needs at least a 10K trailer (with an electric brake controller, and an Equal-i-zer hitch)
