Several threads discussing tips of rotary cutter blades ending up in weird places has me a bit nervous about buying a used one. Would I be paranoid just buying new blades, just in case there are cracks or unseen damage on the existing ones? Any other specific things to look for?

There are a few decent ones around here going for $400 or so (5-6' KK pedigree), and saving a bit of coin on my 'training' cutter seems to make sense...but only if it's safe.

Thoughts?

If I were going buy any used PTO driven implement, I'd want the seller to rig it up and ensure it runs properly. That isn't a 100% test, but at least you'd know if it runs smoothly. With a cutter, you can expect some initial vibration that should cease within about 3-5 seconds.
That's exactly what I did with a used chipper I bought (we even ran a few small branches through it)...ran fine and is currently giving me good service.

BTW, wouldn't hurt to check the gearbox oil level first. A dry gearbox won't leak any fluids. If the seller is willing to lift the cutter, you can examine the blades for any obvious damage. If lifted by the 3PH, make sure you use jack stands to block it up.

No guarantees with used equipment, but you can do some upfront checks before you buy.
