Deere 990
Hello all,
I am doing the first service (50 hours) on my Deere 990. Where is the best place to get the grease, oil, trans fluid, and filters. Is there a good place online, go to the local Napa, or should I suck it up and go to the dealer?
Thanks, JK

For my JD4700 I get the filters from JD. Filter quality has been argued to death like which oil to use but I'm convinced JD has danged good filters. My dealer has them at a fair cost and has them in stock. Fleetguard makes JD filters and as a result I get my oil and fuel filters for my F350 from the JD dealer. His prices are the same as the retail places, he has them in stock and mails them to me which saves me from going to NAPA/Autozone/etc to find out they don't have what i need in stock.

NAPA parts seem real expensive to me. I had to buy a hydraulic hose from NAPA and it was about $30. My JD dealer sold me the same thing for about $20-25. Then NAPA sold me a filter that did not fit and simply shrugged their shoulders. The NAPA store is owned/run by three guys. Waved at one of them this morning when I drove by but I dont' shop their unless I have too since I'll pay top dollar.

I run the truck and tractor on Shell 5W40 from WallyWorld. Tried to buy it at the previously mention NAPA years ago but they wont keep it in stock. If I was going full synthetic I would likely use JD's oil since he always has it in stock.

Later,
Dan

Welcome new member!

For your first change the dealer may give you some neat tips & tricks if you buy there.

I buy pails of oil from Sams Club - Universal Transdraulic.

Grease and engine oils from Fleet Farm. Spring & Fall they run a buck or 2 discount specials.

Filters I buy online at Filter1 Wix heavy duty engine, oil, automotive, truck, and tractor filers. for everything.

If you support the tractor dealer with purchase of maintenance items, you will develop a better relationship with him. If the tractor breaks down out of warranty, you are more likely to get repair information help if he recognizes your face. Forget the fact that you purchased the tractor there, the dealer can't survive on one tractor sale every 5 years. If you expect the dealer to be there the next time that you need something, then support him on a regular basis. It might cost a few dollars more, but in the end, it will be worth it for the developing relationship.

Go to the dealer.

The dealer is a great place to start. They made the tractor so they have the OEM parts and supplies for it. It never hurts to shop around for different filters and lubricants but JD factory supplies are top of the line and usually readily available.

I went to the dealer for everything but the synthetic I put in the engine.

Replace them all at slightly different times, and you won't be overrun with used oil to take to (probably) your auto parts store for recycle.

I noticed that TSC has Rotella 5w40 synthetic, as does Walmart. It's probably about the best-priced, brand name (Wally's brand is cheaper) synthetic for the engine.

Your dealer, I'm sure, will recommend the low vis hydraulic oil. Unless you're way down south (didn't look at your profile) buy it.
