BUZZ saw!

I've approached an ollllllllld farmer about an Allis-chalmers tractor he has mentioned selling. While talking he says he's got a buzz saw for it. Since I heat exclusively with wood, I'm thinking that'd be pretty cool. Of course I've heard about the danger, but would it be a good acquisition? What would an old saw like this be worth? Are they hard to operate? You'll have to answer without knowing what condition the saw is in, because I haven't seen it either. Thanks for the help! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

If you have a lot of 3-10" wood in 4-12' lengths that you want to make into firewood, this will do a real good job. It is not so handy for large cuncks of wood that you need to split. If the wood you are planning to cut has _any_ metal in it, or a chance of any metal, you will wreck the blade, and the chance of hurting someone goes up exponentially. About the worst scolding I ever got from dad was when i pounded a nail into a tree. That was very strictly forbidden by many of the oldtimers. If you get wood from unknown sources these days......

So, depends what you want to do. They are a bit of a chore to put on, so you will want a big stack of wood before bothering.

You say you are aware of the dangers. In other forums on this site, folks are wanting to _buy_ (pay good money!) to retrofit their tractors with a kill switch for the tractor seat because of the safety issue. I guess those folks would shreik in terror & put you in prison for wanting to use a buzz saw. It is one of the most dangerous things around, but does a good job of sizing smaller clean tree limbs.

They worked real good on the smaller stuff you'd put in a cook stove, but not for logs you put in a heater or fireplace. They weren't particularly dangerous when folks could keep their minds on what they were doin', but you don't want to be near one while thinkin' about that upcomin' audit by the IRS. Is this what you are referring to as a buzz saw? Long as you keep your self out of the blade and flying chips, it seems pretty harmless, Have a lot of folks gotten hurt with these? How much do these go for?

I think thats it, similar anyway. Surprisingly the version pictured is a much later version. The one I'm "considering" is belt driven, not PTO. The belt in itself is more dangerous yet. There is usually a reason they stop making things, price, safety, lawsuits, death, just to name a few! I like to burn big logs, and from what I've seen and heard, you can do as much if not more with a chainsaw. I'll probably steer clear of it, unless the ol farmer will throw it in. Not only, can you only saw what 12-14" logs, but you have to lift them to the saw!!
