Kubota BX1800
I just bought a my first Kubota Tractor its a BX1800 only 390 hours I payed 5000 for it it only came with a MMM 52" deck. I have a question siince i just bought it i dont know the service history on my tractor. it only has 39 hours. My local dealer wants to change all the fluids( oil Hyd and Hydro filters, axels ) in the tractor which will cost 450 dollars. Is this over kill or smart.

It is smart to change all the fluid, fluid filters, oil filter, fuel filters, and air filter.

That said, the price is more than double what you can do it for yourself. If you can change oil on a car, you can do this, easily. It also helps you learn a lot about your tractor and is satisfying.

Just get the materials. We have photo step-by-step instructions here or at Messicks.com. The photo array at Messick is particularly good.

Put that extra $250 toward an implement you desire. That's my $.02

Here's the parts list.

1 oil filter
3 quarts of 10w-30 diesel rated oil from Kubota or any WalMart near you. Shell Rotella, etc.
2 fuel filters. One front, one rear.
4 gallons of SUDT or SUDT-2
5 quarts of 75w-90 synthetic gear lube for front axle. (or use SUDT)
1 air filter element
1 HST filter (they're pricey, but there's no substitute)
Grease gun and a tube of grease. Black moly is popular
I'd also drop the anti-freeze and re-fill using diesel specific product.

A couple of catch pans. One will need to be large to hold trans HST fluid.
Do NOT overfill anything. Run for an hour and recheck HST level. Run front axle for two weeks and re-check. They have air pockets that need to be worked out.
Did you get an owner's manual? If so consult for fluid amounts.
Best regards and happy servicing!
Take your time, it still won't be over two hour's work.

Agree, do it yourself, JOHNTHOMAS has bumped up a good thread and here is another good piece of information. Kubota BX Service

BTW, $450 for a tractor he already has on the lot, no picking up or delivery, seems on the rich side of price scale anyhow. Frankly, I might have used the full monte servicing of the machine as a bargaining chip, but since you've already bought it, no can do.

We've had a few of these reports lately of rather stiff costs for routine maintenance. Cost are rising. D.I.Y.
