With the help of my brother-in-law, I installed a steel driveway gate and will install the opener tomorrow as all the civil work is complete.
Of the two tractors, the BX-1850 did most of the work using the 3 pt. The BX24 did support work.
BX-1850
1. Power cable run to gate from house to gate using subsoiler with single tooth attachment. Made an 18 inch trench without disturbing the lawn much. Great implement for trenching.
2. Post holes for 8 foot steel posts (they weighed a ton) using Leinbach Line 7200 JR post hole digger. This is a very useful implement, and relatively inexpensive (about $500 delivered). It got stuck once and had to back it out manually when it hit a big root, but the second hole went 40 inches in about 5 minutes only because I was being careful. It will dig to its limit in less than a minute in soil without roots and rocks. For a BX 1850, the closest hole to the top link attachment gives the necessary ground clearance for the mounted auger.
BX-24
The BX-24 played a supporting role making a trench across the macadam driveway. I used the edge teeth to break as small as possible pieces of driveway and it worked ok. I bought two sacks of sakrete macadam to fill the trench over the steel conduit I placed in the trench. The driveway had to be crossed to power the opener on the other side of the two leaf gate. By the way, on the internet there is a neat way to go under a driveway using galvanised steel pipe and a hose attachment. The theory is that the water pressure and mallet strikes will dig under the driveway. I bought the pipe and the attachments to use this technique. It doesn't work. Forget about it. Besides flooding the area you are in, you go about a foot and it stops. Any root will stop the progress. I guess in rockless, rootless sand it would work.
