I have a 2005 BX2230. I am wondering about changing the hydraulic oil. Is this the same as the transmission oil, and they are a shared system?

I am not due for an engine oil change for 35 more hours, which would be at a 100 hour mark. Yet the oil seems a bit dirty. I know the dealer changed it before I bought it. Is this normal for diesel engines vs gas engines - to look dirtier?

Thanks

Your Kubota tractor uses a special synthetic hydraulic oil that is only available from Kubota dealers. It is called Super UDT. If you use anything other than the Super UDT, your hydraulics will become very sluggish. Kubota recommends changing it at the 50 hour and 500 hour mark, from what I remember, however, it is my belief that changing it isn't necessary, since it is a closed loop system. You will need to add oil to it periodically, as a result of leakage when you couple and uncouple hoses.
As for the engine oil, I change mine every 50 hours and install a new filter. I feel that oil is a lot cheaper than changing an engine. I use 5w30 Rotella Diesel Oil, and a Kubota filter. I also add a few ounces of a fuel additive called Service Power (white bottle) to the fuel every time I fill the tractor. I have never had any fuel issues, or starting issues, no matter how cold the climate gets. I also have a block heater to warm the engine in extreme cold since it will make starting easier, and since "heat" is a lot kinder to my engine.

Transmission and hydraulic oil are the same. Kubota UDT or Super UDT are recommended. Super UDT has better cold weather operating properties. Actually, I don't know if you can even get UDT anymore. The change interval on my BX-25D is 200 hrs for the filter and 400 hrs for the oil. I'm not sure about the 2230, I imagine someone else here will advise.

It is normal for diesel engine oil to quickly blacken after a change due to soot that accumulates in the oil. Do not be concerned. I also use Rotella, but I use T-5 10W-30 semi-synthetic.

Did the BX2230 hydraulic at 50 and between 300 and 400 hours. Around here I will not go much over 4-5 years on hydraulic oil changes to keep moisture buildup down.

Super UDT is needed in the BX tractors for the hydro to operate the best.

RE the engine oil, it will turn black very quickly in you engine. This is normal for Diesel engines, so don't worry about it...

Do change it at recommended intervals though. But expect to see it black soon after the next oil change.

I believe you can use either UDT or SUDT in your tractor. Like others here I only use SUDT, but either should work fine. Unless UDT is not longer sold, that I don't know as a SUDT only user...:)
