BX 2230 Mower

Just bought a new BX2230 without a mower because I have heard so many conflicting reports from various dealers I just wasn't sure where to go. So, I heard about you guys and here I am.

I mow 3 acres fairly flat with a few rocks here and there and am trying to decide between a mid mount 6 ft or a finishing mower. I mow up around my house with a push mower so that's not an issue. I have heard that mid mounts get stuck easier or drag if the terrain isn't level. But then I heard that finishing mowers will beat you to death if the field is rocky. Any help you can give is appreciated. Also, if I go with a finishing mower is it better to go Kubota?

I use both a Kubota MMM and a Muratori flail mower on my BX1500 to mow 4 acres. For mowing down a heavy 5" tall orchard cover crop I use the flail mower since it will handle the huge volume of material and leaves it right in the path as a nice mulch. It also eats small branches & prunings, saving some pickup time before mowing.

The MMM is good for mowing grasses & clover where you don't care about leaving an even mulch. Because of the side discharge you need to plan your direction so it discharges onto the area already mowed, otherwise you can end up trying to mow a big windrow on top of uncut grass. The MMM does a very nice job though, and I've never had any problems with dragging except on very uneven ditch banks or creek corssings. Of course mine is only 48" wide so that conforms to the ground easier than a 72".

I have a BX2230 and 60"mmm,I mow 2 acres of lawn which is not perfect lawn.My lawn is hilly,rocky, and uneven at places and the 60" mid mount mower from Kubota does and excellant job.Just set the mower up like described in manual,DO not run on the wheels,I think your be more than happy. Also I have a 5 acre feild that I mow with it once in a while If you don't let the grass get over 8 to 9" high it will cut it down to 3" in 1 pass.Maybe your dealer will let you try one before you buy?

Of 2 heavily wooded acres, I mow about an acre of mixed terrain with a 60" MMM. The worst that has happened is some "topping" of old wheel ruts with the front edge of the deck. As previously mentioned, I would mow "just off the wheels" as it makes them much more prone to breakage .

Mowing grass since I was 10, I would put the MMM mower performance near the top. It leaves some "stragglers" if you mow much too fast or moderately quick through a sharp turn. Overall finish is quite fine, though.

Limited experience with towbehinds, but from what I've seen they're just not close in the "look" of the yard when done.

Rocks would worry me in either regard, but the front lip of the Kubota MMM is a very, very durable item. Clearly designed to whack a thing or two without ill consequence.

If you get "stuck" on the MMM mounted to a 2230, I'd like to see what lunar surface you're trying to mow!

Lastly, I only know of the 54" and 60" Kubota deck options for the 2230...not a 72". Never looked, but I'm not sure that others make a deck. If time is paramount, perhaps a towbehind would be a bit quicker, but limiting in my opinion. Ditch the push mower and use the MMM around the house, too. That would probably get a good start on any time disadvantage...
