BX-23 Backhoe won\'t take grease.

Help Guys,

I can not grease one of the fittings on my Backhoe. It's located on the Boom nearest the operators seat about mid-way up.
I have a good grease gun and all the other grease fittings work just fine.
I even took another fitting out ( that I know works ) and tried it in the hole with no success. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Do you suppose they did'nt drill the hole out inside?
The Back Hoe is off for the winter & won't use again till I fix it.

Thank's guys... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: BX-23 Backhoe won\'t take grease.

I doubt the hole was not drilled all the way through. Most of that stuff is done by machines that are preset to drill the proper depth. That hole is also later tapped for the zerk fitting.

I would first remove the zerk fitting and spray brake cleaner in the hole to flush out any grease and/or dirt/rust that was in the hole and see if that clears it. Don't use carburetor cleaner, that will take paint off.

If that doesn't do it then you could drive the pin a little over halfway out so you could make sure the hole is clear all the way into the bushing hole. Don't drive it all the way out or the backhoe may fall apart and be hard to put back together.

Re: BX-23 Backhoe won\'t take grease.

Was this something that just happened? In other words - were the grease fittings working ok before? I am asking because I have a similar problem with a couple of the fittings on my BX23. The last time I went to try and grease all the pivot points there were a couple of the grease points that would not take any grease. I assumed that the Zerk's were bad and have been meaning to go get some new ones but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Up until that last grease session they were working fine for me.

Re: BX-23 Backhoe won\'t take grease.

Guys,

I have been faithful with the greasing. That fitting was always hrd to grease but, the grease would go in until the last couple of greasings. It got harder & harder to force any grease in at all????why ???
I bought the service manual last week so I'll look up to see exactly what this fitting greases & try to figure out the cause.
Till then, I thank you guys for the help.
I'll post as soon as I can sit down & study.

Re: BX-23 Backhoe won\'t take grease.

Take the fitting out that won't take grease and go to your auto parts store and buy a new one and try it. I have a loader on my JD 4400 and I have to do this on occasion.Or you can remove a fitting you works and install it in place of the fitting that will not take grease and try that. If that works make sure you put the old fitting back in to keep the dirt out.

Re: BX-23 Backhoe won\'t take grease.

I had the same problem with my BX23. I ended up pulling the pin out, cleaning the pin and inside. When I reinstalled it took grease fine.

Re: BX-23 Backhoe won\'t take grease.

Thanks for the ideas,
I took the cover off the BackHoe today & pulled out the grease fitting again. This time I stuck a plastic wire tie into the hole & moved it around. It went in about 3 inches & the socket was loaded with clean grease. I put it back together & tried to grease it & it allowed a little grease in. I guess because I took a little out with the wire tie.
So, I guess it's ok just full of grease but won't let it squish out the other side.
In warmer weather I'll try knocking the pin out a little & spray cleaner, (carb),. in the hole & try to really, really, clean it out good & start all over with the grease.
I was nervous about not getting any grease in --to protect the joint -- but I feel better today thanks to you guys.

Thanks Paul /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I would use brake parts cleaner. It will cut the grease but won't take paint off like carburetor cleaner. Since a mchaninc taught me that I use brake parts cleaner for most things, seems to work as well and not as likely to melt the paint.

Re: BX-23 Backhoe won\'t take grease.

Paul,

I ran into something similiar on my Case TLB at the bottom of the boom. Turned out that the cantilevered weight of the backhoe forced the pin to seal off the grease path on one zerk. After putting the bucket on the ground, the grease went in easily. See if the weight is forcing your pivot pin toward the grease path.
