bx-23 ,
Iam trying to figure out where a good place to hook down my bx-23 to the trailer.I have learned my lesson with heavy ratchet straps, iam going with chain and chain binders.
I just got off line with the dmv here in MAINE.I read all i could about trailer laws.It seems section 2386[binding of loads]has been repealed, for whatever reason. I have heard in the past lots of different storys about whats legal tie downs in our state.I plan on visiting with a trooper,to see whats going on with this repealed law.
Heres what i had in mind. Please tell me if is:
a good plan
overkill
will harm my tractor
is not a good place to hook

I have some heavy fire hose to run these chains through.heres what im thinking after looking over BOTA:
TRACTOR:Going to run one chain behind the grill gaurd, another on the frame work behind the seat.
FRONT LOADER: Going to run through my center bucket hook bind to front corners of trailer.
BACKHOE OR REAR ATTACHMENT: in the past maine law was every attachment had to be secure[so im told].

TOTAL 4 CHAINS AND BINDERS. IF you haul your bota with binders, please give me your thoughts.

I dont use binders, use straps in the 10,000 lbs rating range. 2 on the front of the frame, and 2 on the back. It is against the law here to attach them to an attachment. I have never had one to slip or move. I make sure that the webs are not against any sharp edges, not in a bind around metal and pretty much a straight line from the connectiong point to the tractor. I have a frame on my trailer that helps with this.

I wrap my chain through the front cross of the frame (where your grill guard mounts) and through the 3pt in the rear (I usually have the box blade or hitch mounted to allow the chain to hold something). A chain on the FEL is not needed.

I use straps only on the motorcycles (2 custom fitted 10k ratchets on each bike in wheel chocks). They are clean and don't scratch the chrome. Not a problem on the tractor, LOL.

escavader,

First of all, read Dargo's thread here...

Second decide what you want to do...meet the requirements of the law...or secure your tractor as best as you can.

Myself, when I get a trailer, I will use six chains and ratcheting binders, four chains on the tractor and one to hold the loader bucket down, and one to hole the backhoe bucket down.

Why? Because I generally don't care what the law says. I just want to do it as best I can. Many do with less.

OK...one could argue why not eight chains on the tractor and two each on the loader bucket and backhoe? I guess that would work too, but it seems unrealistic...

Four grade 70 chains on the tractor, one on the bucket and one on the backhoe...makes me comfortable.

Now I don't have a trailer (yet) and never towed anything so take these words with a grain of salt.

Still...better to do a little more than a little less...in this case, if the worst happens...a little more is certainly better...
