I have a BX 24 with a snowblower and a gravel driveway. I know a bad combination. This year I have broken more shear pins esp the fan one. I am having a very hard time driving out the old one. I have tried "never sieze" on the pins but no help.
Any ideas.

Sorry for your difficulties. I'm sure it's frustrating. Can't help with stuck remnant of pin. Should be easy to remove. Suspect more might be going on here. Could flange be blocking?

Some tips that may help.
1) raise the skid feet to higher level to keep above gravel.
2) make sure blower is adjusted to level; otherwise you are operating a plough that will pick up many stones.
3) if blower is level, problem could be with driveway, in spring, use a box blade or other scraper to smooth highspots out of driveway that donate stones
4) use electrical tape to convieniently store spare shearpins on attachment arms for when the inevitable happens again :(
5) as someone else posted, clean blower after use to eliminate ice

Hope some of this helps

Thanks.... I already do these things. But when I have to replace a pin it has allways been difficult. So far the most hepl has come from a small c-clamp and a short bolt this starts the broken shear pin out and then I can tap the new one in place.
Any other thoughts ????

I think you may have two issues. First is I suspect that you have broken so many shear pins/bolts that the impeller housing is no longer smooth and concentric. I had this problem on a Honda blower when I had the driveway from **** in CT. The edge of the sheared bolts is sometimes proud of the inner shaft and spins in the impeller and tears the heck out of both the shaft and the impeller. Best thing to do is to pull the cross shaft and remove the impeller and clean up the shaft. If badly damaged you may need to take the shaft and the impeller to a shop and have some welding and machining done. I had to repair my impeller with gas welding and a dremel to rough the welds out. I then used an adjustable ream to resize the impeller housing. This was enough time and work to go through that I took care of the primary issues which was blower set up. I welded some pads on the skid shoes so they kept the augers the heck away from the gravel. Flat driveways are easy. Steep drives with corners and crowns are NO fun.

You might want to use a blade for the first few snows until you get a good hard pack going. If you already have the front quick hitch, you can get the hydro angle Kub front blade fairly reasonably. I had this setup on my BX and liked it a lot.

Thanks Again.
I have had the difficulty in removing the shear pins from day one. So I did not think of the shaft being damaged.

I think you should sell me your snow thrower really cheap - and I'll sell you mine (a rear mounted Ford 715) - I break pins all the time on my gravel drive - and they are super easy to replace! :D
Then - I'll be helping you out...
