My tach is not working not sure if its the alternator or the display panel? Having a hard time removing the steering wheel? Does anybody have experience with these problems?

All the gauges are on a 15 amp fuse in the fuse block. If none of the gauges work that is the place to start. The signal is provided by the alternator via its regulator. The meter is electronic so only fix is replacement. There is a testing procedure for that signal circuit in the WSM if you are electrical savvy. The WSM is a good investment if you want to get that deep into DIY mechanics.

Good luck on the diagnosis... I hate electrical. Lasted one quarter of EE in college before switching to ME degree! I guess I just need to see things to understand them. But that doesn't apply to women.

Dragon,

Unfortunately a lot of tractor mechanics are not electrical savvy either and we pay for them to research and often expensive parts changing stuff that is OK instead of proper diagnosis. That drives me to do all I can my self. Fortunately I have gained a lot of these skills over the years, and my research does not cost me $125/hr. I am really getting too old to crawl under stuff anymore so I am looking at building a ramp/rack to at least sit under my BX. I hope Will only has a fuse problem.

I am getting a low voltage off the alt. which increases as the engine revs up, so I think its the display panel. I have checked the fuses, wires, cables and connectors. I cant seem to get the steering wheel off. The WSM says remove the cover, remove the nut and then the steering wheel. But the steering wheel would come off. I need the steering wheel off to remove the display panel. Any ideas on how to remove the steering wheel? thanks to all who have responded.

Way back with cars, we'd sit so our knees were under the steering wheel. Thread the nut back on til it's flush to the shaft (if that leaves a couple if threads under it). Pull up on the wheel rim with your knees and whack the nut/shaft end with a BFH. Maybe hol a piece of flat aluminum in between if you're concerned you'll mash threads. That usually let's the wheel pop off the taper.
Or your tractor might be completely different and this tip is useless! Good luck.

May need to use a steering wheel puller. Sometime places like AutoZone have a free rental where you can get one for a one time use. If you google "steering wheel puller" you will get some photos under images that may help you come up with something if you don't want to buy/rent. I used a gear puller before with success.
