BX 2660 Front Axle Oil Capacity

Anyone Know For Sure how much oil the front axle actually takes? The manual says 5 quarts.

Reason No. 1 for asking is my manual says 3.7 quarts for the crankcase oil with filter when it actually takes 4.25 quarts to fill it. Had to go buy another quart to finish the oil change. So I now question the accuracy of the manual for the front axle also.

Reason No. 2 for asking is I want to be sure I have enough oil on hand before I change it. I plan to use SUDT hydro fluid and hopefully I have enough left over from the 5 gallons I had before I changed the tranny fluid.

Just use 90W gear oil. Big jug is cheap and it tends to cause less leaks than SUDT. Better *and* cheaper.

Note after you fill the axle, the level WILL go down after a few hours as lube works its way throught the bevel pivots. Keep an eye on it and top off as needed.

5 quarts should be correct. When changing the oil, be sure to remove the vent plugs at the top of the outer gear housings. Many folks seem to miss this step, and can't get all the oil in on the first try.
I would recommend using gear oil over SUDT... fewer leaks down the road.
