Here is a photo of my primary filter (471 hrs) taken off my 2200. I don't recommend going this long (even though the maintenance schedule says check every 100 or change every 500 hours). While I had no significant "sputtering issues", I did not notice how much power was being robbed until after I changed out the filters... what a difference! So, for all the wondering fuel filter changing folks, I'd say do it twice as often as recommended, just to keep your power up for those yard projects!.

Good post. That filter is pretty nasty.
I just did my 300 hr and may be changing mine out sooner than called for also.

On a side note, I've been thinking about adding a water separater just for GP and noticed the JD2305 and new smaller Yanmar/Cubs have them, I may be adding a new "species" part to my BX23 :D

very nasty, it didn't look that bad until you cut it open. A more transparent filter housing would be a help. amazingly, the secondary filter looked pretty clean. The first filter really catches the crud, if you do only one, that's the one to change...

I have been thinking the exact same thing. I had a water problem last year and even experienced some sputtering caused by a bad habit of mine of siphoning diesel out of my truck when the tanks aren't completely full (the water sits near the bottom). Room consideration is key. The water separators on the little JD are surprisingly large and having had a look I really couldn't see incorporating it. On the other hand, there is a separator that is common on highway truck generators with 2 cylinder Kubota engines that I think would fit nicely where the current second stage filter is under the hood on the BX's. The question of sufficient flow enters the equation.

I bought a filtering funnel a few years ago:
Mr. Funnel: What Does It Do?

I use it when I fill the tank on diesel and gas engines. I didn't believe it worked when I bought it, so I plugged the end, filled it half way with gas, then put in a few tablespoons of water. When I unplugged the end the fuel ran out but the water stayed behind. Only problem is the fuel flows through it a little slowly because of the filter restriction.

I did the same today on my G1900 as it had started to "splutter". It was almost completely blocked. I can't understand where all the muck comes from as the fuel tank is new.
The filter had been on there for 6 years but had only done 150 hours! After changing it I noticed far less white smoke on start up, so will keep an eye on that in the future.
