BX hydro fan

I just bought a 2004 BX2250 and was reading about the $2 fan that gets broken and the huge amount of work to install one. Where is it on the machine , and is it easy to see if it is damaged?

A search, like "BX fan", will bring up several threads and pictures on the issue. Several "fix" options are available including one from the dealer.

It is easy to see but you have to crawl under the tractor. Look in front of the transmission for a white fan.

Its under the tractor mounter on the transmission end of the drive shaft from the engine.

Find the hydro filter and look up and to the center "hopefully its still there".

Correction, that fan costs about $6-$9, depending where you order from. But yes, the tractor pretty much has to come apart (on the BX24) in order to do any replacement/repair of it. Very easy to get taken out by a 1/4" to 1/2" twig that decides to run up in there.

Oh, if you have KTAC insurance, they will cover the cost, minus the deductible of course.

Skid plate: home-made or from Bro-Tek is the way to go. There are many examples if you search on "HST fan".

As to operating temperatures, that has also been a much debated topic and most say it is not. I will however be drilling small vent holes in mine if not taking it off in the summer when I have my MMM on as I have to remove the front one anyway. I admit that I am probably being overly cautious and may change my mind in the future.

The only thing about the current guard is that it does not protect from things coming in from the front (i.e. driving forward over the branch). But yes, something is better than nothing esp. at $39.

Expanded metal was a thought I had too - mentioned it on another related thread for opinions, but no one chimed in. The folks on here are much smarter than I will ever be, so I figured there was some obvious reason no one has done it and I am just clueless as to what it is

I am ordering the new Kubota guard, but still may (try to) fab something up with the cheese grate stuff

Expanded metal comes with different sized openings and in different gauges. After reading the posts on the fan breakage that option came immediately to mind. An advantage would be that air flow would still be reasonable. Eventually I'll make one - probably after the white plastic pieces are found under the tractor.

A stick would have a million to one chance to make it through expanded metal all the way to the fan. Of course, that would be on my tractor.

Hardware cloth type. Extra heavy thick screen looking metal material.

Thanks, BP. I get it now. But it's probably hard to find in a decent gauge. And stainless steel probably would be prefered. Well, Lo and Behold there are sources in the footnote ads at bottom of page.

After putting some hours on my BX2230, for my usage, I feel I will just be careful, and leave it the way it is. The only time my mower is off is for plowing in the winter anyway.

Skid plate(s) do more than protect hydro fan from wayward brush. If that's all you want...OK, but skid plates pretty much "bomb proof" the underside.
