BX MMM attachment pin won\'t stay put

Has anyone experienced this. Seems like after I mow for awhile, the right side pin with a spring works itself out and the deck will drop. Even all the way pushed in, it doesn't go in as far as the left side. It is hitting on the dowel, so I know it won't go in any farther. I don't think it sticks through the other side far enough to drill and use a pin. Any suggestions? This is a minor, but irritating problem.

Rossco. We had one come to the shop with the same problem. We removed the springs and drilled a hole just inside of the outer bracket and used a spring pin to keep the pins in place. Th owner has not had a problem sense.

Re: BX MMM attachment pin won\'t stay put

Thanks for the suggestion. Sounds like a good fix, but I am still puzzled as to why it is only this side that does it and why it does it at all. Could the spring be weak? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: BX MMM attachment pin won\'t stay put

I've had it happen a couple of times, sprayed 'em with WD40 and that fixed it. Both times it was while mowing and bucking on rough ground so I theorized that the pins were working themselves outward and the friction didn't allow the springs to push them back in.

Re: BX MMM attachment pin won\'t stay put

Rossco,
Here's what I have determined is the cause of your problem ( I experienced the same thing). I had recently dropped the deck a bit closer for cutting and of course I performed the adjustment to the deck wheels (1/2" from surface). My wife was mowing with it and thought the cut was too close. I raised the deck back but did not perform the deck wheel adjustment. After that the right side of the deck dropped. I wondered what caused it but didn't think anything of it so I set the spring pin in and thought that would take care of it. Well, 15 minutes later my wife started hollering that the right side dropped again. I thought about it this time, reset the spring pin and then performed the wheel adjustment. Haven't had a problem with it since so, the moral of the story is, perform the adjustment every time you change deck height, just as the book recommends.
My guess is that without the deck wheel adjustment the deck had excessive travel without being stabized and its increased motion worked the spring pin lose.

Re: BX MMM attachment pin won\'t stay put

Thanks for the advice. The deck wheel adjustment still confuses me. I have set them at the holes specified in the manual for different cutting heights and it just didn't seem right. Actually, the cutting height adjustment nob doesn't seem acurate to me either. I guess I just need to take some time and measure things and possibly do some adjustment. I will see if proper wheel height will take care of the problem.
