Yesterday morning I went outside to start my BX at around 7:00 in the morning and I glow plugged it for about one minute, it just kept cranking and cranking, and it kept puffing out black smoke out of the exhaust. I was so upset, I thought that it was the the battery being low. But I don't know. We covered the tractor back up and went inside for about 15 minutes then we came back out and my cousin pulled the throttle all the way open/out and he glow plugged it for about 30 seconds and then he turned the key and it turned over!!! Within the first 5 seconds that it was running, I slowly began to throttle it down to about 1700 rpm so it could idle and get it's oil pressure up at a lower rpm. I know the the reason of it not starting wasn't because of gelled fuel because me and my dad put more than enough diesel 911 in the tank and ran it a few days before. So it had to have been something else. Over the course of this year i'm going to get a battery tender so I can have the battery plugged in during next winter and the following winters to come.

I've found that I've had to open the throttle lately, just a little, to get mine to fire off easy even w/glow plugs & warm garage. Not sure what this means but, if that's what takes I just do it.

Mine is under a tarp behind my house but it is also plugged in for the block heater as well.

BX man,

I have had the same problem with my BX2350. Fixed it by going to about 12% throttle BEFORE trying to start. even at -1 degrees, it fires right up after about 1 1/2 minutes of glow plug time. :2cents:

Sorry to hear about your problem. I run Power Service in my BX-25 year round and never had a problem. I'm no big time mechanic, but my understanding of 911 is that it's a means to start a tractor with gelled fuel. My understanding is that once you use this, you should swap out your fuel filter. 911 shouldn't be used to prevent anti-gelling; Power Service should be.

Thanks for the advice. The tractor has around 180 hours on it and we have been using diesel 911 in the tank for the past two winters. I think that I have seen power service before but I thought that it was the same thing and we actually just switched to the power service last week

Diesel is made by Power Service but is meant to be used if you already have a gelling problem. For prevention, Power Service makes a product you add to your fuel also, I think it comes in a gray bottle.

I also have to give mine some throttle to make it start.

I have Power Service in my fuel, the tractor is in my garage, which was about 5 degrees this morning. I have a tarp over it and a couple of hot light bulbs underneath on the floor. I didn't touch the pan, but I gotta believe it was warmer than 5 degrees. I ran my plugs for about 30 seconds which has been enough before, but not today. I tried again and it cranked over a little slower. 3rd time and I could tell it wasn't gonna go.

I plan on getting a block heater before next winter. After this morning, I thinking about a tender as well. As soon as I put my boost on it, it took right off. The hydraulics are really slow at that temp.

So for those that have a heater, what do you do with the cord?
For those that run a tender, do you just leave the front screen off or is there some means of running 2 cables out that you can hook up to? Or is this small enough you can wire it in and mount it permanently? Do you then run it on the same power cord as the block heater? I'm also toying with the idea of a magnetic heater for the rear end (or something), but not sure where I would put it.

Interesting, usually a diesel (Bosch style pump like mine) when the motor is off the governor has the rack in WOT position(why old engines sitting around for a long time tend to runaway). With the weights not turning the governor thinks it needs WOT to keep things going. Also why when you start the diesel you get that rush of rpm and a big chuck of smoke. The stop lever overrides the fuel rack. But whatever works. When mine is cold I'll get some white smoke for a bit (un burnt fuel) until it fires up.

I use Power Service white bottle in the winter, Gray bottle in the summer.
