BX1500 Mower Spindle Grease Amount

Hi Gang,
I have a BX1500 with a 54 inch mower deck. Question is, how much grease does one need to put into the blade spindles? Most things I grease until some squirts out, but with the blade spindle how does one tell its had enough?

I give em 6 pumps several times a season. Say once a month. No trouble for the 10 yrs weve had it.

Yup same here ... I pump it 6ish or so . However the first time for season, I take the blade and cup off and clean up the old grease spun out and then grease till it starts to come out. It does take a bit more then 6 .. but the middle seems to take nearly double for me everytime.

Thanks guys..... I have been using 10-12 pumps so looks like it should be enough grease.... I'll pull the bearing caps the next time the blades need to be sharpened. Appreciate the help.

I had to rebuild one of my spindles last year because the bearing went bad. I had greased it several times a season. I disassembled all 3 for inspection and understand how the upper bearing could have went bad. The cavity in the spindle is huge and what appears to happen when you grease the bearing is that the grease enters above the top bearing and when used the bearing warms up and the grease flow down toward the bottom bearing. It seems to me that the upper bearing will potentially be starved for lubrication if you go extended periods without lubrication. Since the rebuild I give each spindle 3 or 4 pumps of grease(the initial greasing after rebuild was 15 or so pumps). I still do not see any grease in the bearing shield when I inspected it this year before placing into service. JMHO
