Dear Forum:

I am a complete beginner, so I apologize in advance for my lack of expertise.

I am thinking about purchasing my first compact tractor. I am interested primarily in mowing and in tasks involving a front end loader (moving stones, mulch, etc.). My yard is about an acre, and I have extensive gardens. I would also be interested in snow removal with the FEL.

I am looking at a BX1500, which I understand has been discontinued and a BX1850. I really like the BX1500, but I am wondering if it is appropriate for what I intend to do. Specifically, I do not want to purchase a tractor which is underpowered. I understand that diesel engines provide more torque than gas engines. Is the three additional horsepower of the BX1850 significant?

I would also appreciate any general observations which anyone may have regarding these two tractors.

Once again, I apologize for my inexperience, and thank you all very much for your input.

Elliott

Welcome to the forum! I think you'll find that the 18 series tractor is a bit bigger than the 15 series tractor. Bigger equals handling more of a load. That said, there are people on this group using the BX1500 with great success. I don't think you can go too far wrong with either but I personally would lean towards the bigger, more powerful BX1850.

Being an owner of a bx1500 I am still amazed of what this tractor can do. I have about 55 hours on it and it has completed every task that I have thrown at it (digging out my garden, moving dirt, snow removal, and mowing). I don’t know much about the bx1850 but for what you want you cant go wrong with the bx1500. Being discontinued you should be able to hammer out a good price which should make it even more attractive then the bx1850. Plus I like the look of the older models better.

BX1500, FEL, 54MMM, WOODS BACK BLADE

What's the difference in price you are being quoted? When I was looking, there was maybe $500 difference between the 1500 and the 1830 (last year's model). There was another $600 difference between the 1830 and the 2230. I went for the 2230 (now the 2350).

My property is one large hill, so I had a concern about the 1830's ability to chug up the hill with a load. I am glad I bought the slightly bigger tractor. The 2230 needs the extra HP to get up those hills with more than a few hundred pounds added on (FEL and Ballast box alone will get you an extra 1,000 pounds, add dirt to the FEL bucket and you are talking about !,300 extra pounds).

The 1850 will also fetch better resale value since its a newer model.

I too have a 1500 with a 48" MMM and a fel with 90 hours on it. I bought it instead of the 1800 cuz of the smaller mower and shorter wheelbase, as I wanted manuverability and ability to get into smaller spaces. I have never been sorry. I have lots of trees to mow around and like the slightly smaller deck.
As far as the fel, it is unbelievable. I have scraped dirt, gravel, moved loads of fill, mulch, black dirt, pulled out stumps, moved trailers.
Love the small size.
