BX1800 will not shutdown problem

Ok here's what's I have going on.

I have a BX1800, had since new. It will not shut off when the key is placed in the off position. I discovered I had a frozen stop solenoid. Plunger was just "welded" closed. Got a new solenoid but key off will still not shutdown the tractor. The BX1800, at least mine, has the timer relay that sends power to the solenoid when you turn the key off. I pulled the new solenoid off and put power to it and the plunger does activate, so I'm assuming I have a good solenoid. I did test the timer relay, when I turn the key to the off position, I hear the click and get 12v to the solenoid connector plug for about 10 seconds.

So why would the solenoid fail to activate once installed in the tractor.

This is driving me nuts....

I don't believe there should be any power to the solenoid with the key off change the wires around they must be backwards. You want power to the solenoid when the key is turned on.

Evidently, the really old models did it that way. But newer ones do it as the OP described. That way a blown fuse doesn't shut down your rig when you really need it to stay running (big load headed downhill).

The default position for the solenoid is with the plunger extended, or in the start/run position. Upon startup there is no voltage on the wire to the solenoid. Only when the key is turned off does the timer relay send 12v to the solenoid to perform shutdown.

Just a little more info.... I have checked all the fuses even though I don't believe it to be a fuse issue. They were all ok.

I wonder if I might have some sort of ground issue but then again wouldn't I be seeing other issues if that were the case.

I'm still fighting this and I asking for you early BX owners to check something for me.

I have 12v to the stop solenoid plug when the key is turned off, what you'd expect. However, once I connect the solenoid I get nothing upon key off. It's almost like the solenoid is causing a short. It is a brand new solenoid and confirmed that it works.

When the tractor is running, I'm getting 1-2 volts to plug that connects to the solenoid. I would expect 0v. This is leading me to believe that the timer relay is 'leaky' and may be causing my issue.

So can someone check the voltage at the plug with the tractor running and report your results

My BX1800 had this issue when I got it, the former owner had replaced the stop solinoid. I ran a fused wire from the battery to a momentary contact switch, to the solinoid. Now I turn off the key, hit the switch, off, done. Bypass the problematic off-timer/relay, with stuff I already had. My friends L2850 (1986 mdl) had the same issue, but had a factory kill knob.

The problem is fixed. New timer relay. I talked to my dealer and he said they have seen timer relays "leak" voltage, just as I was seeing, especially once they get some age on them. My BX is 14 years young so I guess it was time.
