BX1800 won\'t start

My BX won't start - acts like the drive lever was engaged but it is not. All fuses check okay. Suspect safety switch is stuck but don't know where to look.

Re: BX1800 won\'t start

Can't give any specific advice...

But would try turning the key to the start position and moving all the levers, including the HST pedal, back and forth. Hopefully, doing this would tell you which area was the problem.

For example, you need the range selector to be in neutral, and also the HST pedal to be centered in order for the starter to be given permission to turn the engine over.

Also, you may need to be sitting on the seat. My BX does not have a seat interlock, buy yours might.

Do try moving everything while holding the key in the start position. This might tell you where the problem is...

Afterwards we can wait for those who really know how to help to give better advice.

Don't forget to report back on the solution to the problem. Hope it comes easy!

Re: BX1800 won\'t start

What you have suggested is what I have unsuccesfuly tried. I think when I 1st attempted the start the tractor that the PTO lever was not centered. I mistakenly thought the battery was weak so I attempted to jump start the beast. When that didn't work I began to look for a blown fuse but the one in the engine compartment plus those in the battery area are all ok. The battery solenoid just doesn't engage. Lights work but thats it.

Re: BX1800 won\'t start

I will agree with HENRO, seems like you have a safety switch not making. also if u know u have good battery connection , check the conection at the starter! are you getting any thing when u hit the key?

Re: BX1800 won\'t start

I had the same thing happen and the fuses looked OK, but after I changed it, the tractor started. Those plastic fuses are sometimes hard to tell without a test light. It is faster to change the fuse than it is to test it. It is the orange 20 amp fuse that you need to change. There is a spare in the wire harness under the black tape, at least on yours. I haven't replaced mine yet. Will do that the next time it blows and I don't have one to replace it with. Then you buy a pack of 5, install one, put one in as a spare and loose the other 3 just when you need it again. Don't ask how I know this.... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: BX1800 won\'t start

Did you check the 30A slo blo fuse on the right side of the engine. It is sticking out from the wiring harness, at least on the 2230. Your owners manual will have a drawing that shows about where it is at.

You could have some corrosion on the battery terminals. Even if they look good clean them.

Unfortunately Kubota does not include any kind of wiring diagram so troubleshooting the safety switch circuit will be a matter finding a point at which you have voltage and work your way out from there by physically tracing the wires and checking for voltage at each switch.

The safety switches are "probably" all wired in series so you just go from one safety switch to the next checking for 12 volts on both sides of the switch.

A 12 volt test light is your friend.

Re: BX1800 won\'t start

This seems to be the best possibility. I only checked the fuses visually. I will take your suggestion and change the orange fuse. Probably won't get to this until this evening. Thanks to you and others for advice. I'll report my findings soon.

Re: BX1800 won\'t start

I checked the 5 fuses next to the battery with a meter (none were orange) and they are all good. The fuse next to the engine is okay to. Is there another place to look?

Re: BX1800 won\'t start

How old is the battery? It will run lights on little power. My tractor did the same thing. Just clicked but put a new battery in and away I went.

Re: BX1800 won\'t start

It is the original battery, so it is about 3 1/2 years old. I can't even get a click when I turn the key to the start position, just lights on the dash and headlights look about as bright as ever but I certainly won't say that the battery is not the problem only that I could not start it even with a jump.

Re: BX1800 won\'t start

If you can get access to another battery which you know is good I'd swap it out and try it. It's an electrical problem for sure but you could eliminate the battery as a culprit. You've checked the fuses as you mention and the 30amp slow blow fuse?? You didn't mention if that one was checked.

Re: BX1800 won\'t start

IF, and I mean IF, you know what you are doing, bypass the safety switches by running a jumper wire from the positive post of your battery to the activator side of you starter solenoid. But make sure everything you can think of is disengaged - transmission in neutral, PTO(s) in neutral, etc. I bet it will start. I had a similar problem this morning with my F150. It turned out that the clutch interconnect switch was a little sticky. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: BX1800 won\'t start

The test of a good battery is to turn on the headlamps and have someone observe them while trying to engage the starter. If they dim, and the starter doesn't crank, then it is a defective battery. If they stay bright, then it is somewhere in the starter circuit that is keeping the voltage from reaching the starter solenoid.

As for someone else's suggestion:
What you suggest about bypassing the safety switches will allow the engine to crank, but it might not start. The electric fuel pump needs to be energized, and that might not be happening if there is an open circuit somewhere.

Re: BX1800 won\'t start

Found this on another post. Could help?

Just writing to give all repliers a HUGE !!!!THANKS!!!!!. Your support and experience meant more to me during this "crisis" than you can imagine. After another hour or so crawling around on the ground and over the tractor I finally shined my million candle spotlight waaaaaaaaaaaay up there under the metal shroud under the seat and LO and BEHOLD....there was yet another safety switch. Upon closer inspection, I saw the plug was detached. It was a BEAR to manuver my big grown-up hands inside the wheel well and under the seat shroud, but with the help of a few really long handled pliers and screwdrivers I was finally able to get it plugged back together. It was one of those few times where I KNEW the problem was fixed and I KNEW the tractor would indeed start this time. She fired right up, like there was never a problem....Again, a MILLION THANKS for all your support! Seems like I always learn 30 more things when I am trying to fix just one thing......

Re: BX1800 won\'t start

Ok, for all who suggested a new battery and how to test the old one, a great big THANKS. I haven't had time to get a new battery but I will by the weekend and I am very sure that will solve this problem
