I'm considering buying a new BX1800 and 54 inch belly mower but I'm wondering if it may be too much tractor for my lot. I have a flat half acre of grass and no obstacles. I would also like to add a snow blower as funds become available. Any thoughts?

I think if you are in a position to buy such a fine tractor, I'd recommend you get it. One thing about the BX, it'll do anything you want, within reason. Lets not forget the versatility of the 3pt, and all the other implements you can pick up, either. You may think you are going overkill, but it's amazing how chores just seem to crop up when you have the ability to do them properly, with the right implements of course.

The other thing is pride of ownership. When everyone else in the area buys the little GT's at the local 5 and dime, you can be proud of the BX. Your's will hold up much longer and when and if you ever decide to sell, you're investment will still hold up when the garbage men pick up your neighbors p.o.s. In the 5 years i've been here, the neighbor on the left has gone thru 3 and the other has been thru 4. (we have hard, rough ground here to deal with).

I have a BX1800 with a 60" mmm mowing almost 3 acres I say go for it you won't be sorry. You will find that the BX's small but mighty size lends it self to many task. I looked at the B series and the NH boomer series and settled on the BX because it fit on the sidewalk between my house and garage so I could snowblow.

OK. You convinced me. Here is the bad news. My dealer quoted me $14200 plus taxes for the tractor and mower. (Canadian dollars) I paid the same amount of money for a new Honda Civic for my wife in 1999. Is this a reasonable price? The quote shows a $2300 discount.

DLB, tractors can be expensive as you are finding out. I paid 500 dollars for my first motorcyle in 1970--new, I had longer hair than my little girl friend and flower power was the "thing" , I paid 2,700 dollars for my first new car in 1973. I think my dad paid about 300 dollars for a new Sears/Roper GT in 1965 and I saw Cessna/Piper adds for 4 place aircraft new for about 6,000 dollars. Here is the thing, your BX or JD whatever or that new Cub will likely last your remaining lifetime and be a pleasure everytime you use it or you could buy 60 Murrays at Wally World.
Hey, get the 60 inch MMM and do yourself a big favor--trust me --you need it and will like it much better than the 54.
Whatever you get, good luck.

"Any thoughts?"

Yes. I don't know if you are being serious or not. I assume you are.

Why do want a compact tractor for a half acre?
That's 100 feet x 200 feet.
My last yard was almost that size, with more to trim around, and I mowed it in an hour with a 21" self-propelled. I snow-blowed with a walk behind unit too. You could do all that for around $1000.
If you want to sit instead of walk, you could be looking at a "lawn tractor" or slightly bigger "garden tractor" that can accomodate a snow blower. Since your budget seems adequate, I would suggest one of the name brands like Kubota, Deere, Simplicity, Toro, Cub Cadet, not Craftsman, etc.

I hope I didn't offend. I mean no offense. Just that if you are asking for a reality check, I gave it.

There's a saying: To a man with only a hammer, every problem is a nail. Some people answer every tractor question with the same answer: BX. It's a great tractor but I don't think it would be the best for your situation.

First of all, no offense taken. I did ask for your thoughts and you gave me yours. I originally started looking for a lawn tractor and that's probably all I need. The BX just seemed like a good idea because I figured it would outlast the lighter duty machines out there. BTW I just bought this house and I got a new walk behind blower last year. I really only need the tractor to cut grass.

Unless you would need the front end loader or rear implements the BX is capable of, you might be throwing money away.Snow removal is one reason you might consider the BX, but if your only doing the lawn I would look at something else. I would stay with a water cooled and preferably a diesel for many years of service. Kubota makes a fine product, and I am partial to them, but the big names make a fine product also.
Approx. price around here for a BX2200 with 60 in mower and front end loader is about 12,600.00, us $.

I just purchased a BX2200 with a FEL and 60 inch MMM for $11,650.00 in south jersey. I was looking
at the local Lowes, Sears, etc. at lawn tractors with a snow blower but unless you are paying cash the
interest rate was 23%. Kubota is offering 3.99% on the BX2200 that made the cost of purcasing the BX2200
within the same range of the cost of the Sears, etc lawn tractor. So you just a few more dollars a month
why not get a real machine.

I also have a small amount of grass to cut but a 200ft by 14ft driveway to clear snow from.
