I pulled the belly mower out and tied up the mid PTO stub shaft up to the bottom. I had previously move the selector to the rear PTO only. I致e run this tractor with a small bush hog like this many, many times. I know it痴 not ideal, but it痴 never been an issue until Saturday.
I unloaded the tractor and bush hog and went to cutting. Somehow, within 25 feet of the trailer, the selector moved into the mid/rear PTO selection on the lever and it went to whipping around under the tractor. I smelled the fluid and loaded it right back up where all the rest of the fluid drained out.
After inspection in the field it just looked like the stub shaft just beat the filter up. Today I replaced the filter and filled it up with oil, tested the function of fwd and rev and raised the lift arms up and down. I shut it down and looked under the tractor and fluid is leaking out at a steady drip from the bottom side of the mid PTO shaft.

What have I destroyed? I知 pretty mechanically inclined, but I致e never done any diesel mechanic work. I知 assuming a sea or maybe bearings of some sort?

Help much appreciated!

Could be the seal or cracked the housing . Just have to get under it and clean off the hyd oil and see where the leak is.........

Why would the pto quick disconnect be on the deck and not from the tractor? That's different.

It appears to be coming out from the hole where the shaft comes out. I didn稚 see any housing cracks. Can this be repaired from underneath without taking the whole thing apart?

Agreed. The only way to remove the stub shaft is to take the u-joint apart. I don稚 understand why it痴 not like the rear PTO.

That is odd. I thought the splines were keyed different to avoid this... I guess the engineers weren't smart enough to prevent this from ever happening.

Though, I've always wondered what would happen if a PTO half section got spun up. Especially that one, it's like 2500 RPMs at full throttle... betcha that thing was acting like a little mini bush hog to the tractor itself.

I guess you found out the hard way.

In any event, all fun aside, looks like you'll need to at minimum replace some seals. Depending on the proper assembly, you may need to remove the transmission.

Good luck.

At a very minimum they should have a interlock mechanism or a lockout procedure to prevent this from happening. I would at least figure out which fuse or plug to pull to disarm the beast.

The rear of the shaft comes off. It is the ring type, pull the outer ring back to release the locking action, then it will slide off the pto shaft.

Agree. Don't really understand why he would need to leave the mid PTO shaft connected to the tractor. My first Kubota was a BX1850 with the 54" mower. Like you said, pull the outer locking ring towards the front of the tractor and the shaft slides right off. Of course none of this helps him now. Hopefully, its just a seal. And in either case, hope he has the KTA insurance on it.

I was puzzled too. I do not have the same model BX as the OP, so did not know...

Still confused about the procedure the OP was following. Can not imagine removing the deck and putting back on if I had to pull the driveshaft apart and reinsert each time. He does not mention disconnecting either end of the driveshaft, but maybe he was at the deck end?
